The cicadas put on a full performance tonight, at sunset.
Going strong from every tree and... as they do at dusk... some were yarping.
I don't know how to describe yarping, other than, it sounds like, "yeoarp, yeoarp, yarp, yarp, yarp, yarp, yaaaaaaaaaah!"

Meanwhile, the tiger lillies are all but done. The last two flowers they had, at least in my yard, still opened today, but will be gone tomorrow.
I still see them up and down the street, and I did see one lightning bug out there tonight, but it won't be long before both are a summer memory.

Later tonight, I went to take out the garbage and spotted a skunk in the back yard.
As he wandered away, I stopped to listen, and... in my back yard, with no wind, it was still ear-ringing silence.
But as I walked back to the street I could hear that one Larry down the block, doing his usual distress call.
I thought, Well, still just Larry, but as I lingered there, I thought I could hear another.
I began slowly walking down the block toward Larry... careful to keep my footsteps silent, and yes... I was hearing a second cricket!
The second one was definitely higher pitch, and not that same distress call. It was a steady call, but less stressed.
I walked further down the block and heard a third cricket, off in a back yard. This one was bigger... lower pitched like Larry, but again, didn't seem as stressed.

So, as the third full week of July begins... where there was only one, there are now three.
And the newer two, may be newbies... based on their similar, less stressed-out call, and one being higher pitch, meaning he's a bit of a runt.
This is how it went with the ciadas a couple weeks ago... first just one... then three... then a few more... then they were everywhere!
In the July 12th entry, Full Moon Garbage Night I wrote...

Assuming an instar is ten days long, I predict I'll start hearing crickets in real numbers by July 22nd... with a second wave joining in ten days after that, on July 32nd... Oh wait, that'd be August 1st!
0--------------------0
So, that's only five nights away now... this coming Friday.
It's sounding like that prediction will be pretty close.
However, no sign of the percussionists... those leaf tappers and chick bugs.
It'll be interesting to know when the first few of those arrive, relative to the cicadas and crickets.
