August 1st is the midpoint between the summer solstice, and the fall equinox, which means every day of August you are closer to astronomical fall than you are the start of summer.
And maybe that's why sociological fall comes so much earlier than it's astronomical counterpart.
The equinox isn't until September 21st, but sociological fall arguably starts the day the first school bus rolls down the street full of kids on their way to class... which these days, will happen before even August is done!
Meanwhile, fashion & entertainment fall begins on September 1st.
So while August is just as hot as July, and just as green, people's minds are on fall, as soon as it begins.
And maybe that's not so silly, considering that by August 1st... SEVEN months of the year have come and gone!.. and there are only FIVE left!
If the first seven went by that fast... then surely Christmas itself is right at the doorstep now!
January through June was your chance to get the year's plans into motion. But everything came to a stop in July... while a new set of complications presented themselves.
August is where you get your second wind. There's still a little time to enjoy the summer, but you're gearing up to make that final push, come September... to realize the year's goals.
August is not the home stretch... just the anticipation of it.
But that's not the only thing that makes August different from July.
Though it's just as hot, and just as green, August brings us a sound track to accompany the light show that arrived with July's lightning bugs.
Now the air is filled with the sound of cicadas all day, and crickets all night.
They will sing the summer out... through to the end of September.

I woke in a good mood, having paid the bills yesterday.
And at work, while getting started in the final upstairs classroom to clean, I took some time to call Commerce Bank about my visa card with them... because it's been flagged for suspicious activity, and unuseable for a month now.
I stayed on hold for half an hour before giving up and getting back to work.
At home, because it was a relatively cool 82F, with a slight breeze, I decided I should mow the lawn.
I didn't get to mow over the weekend because it rained on Saturday, and on Sunday, the neighbors were having a little get together next door.
But you'll recall that the weekend before last, I only managed to mow the back, and not the front... so... after the big storms last friday... it REALLY needed it!
--<>--
At 6:30PM I fired up the mower and embarked upon a TWO HOUR mow of the entire yard, front and back.
And I went through FOUR battery changes to do it!
I dunno what it is with the grass this year, but it's just growing like CRAZY!
I think it has something to do with how much real estate I liberated this spring... coupled with the fact that I likely over-seeded all the ruts and dead patches.
The grass seems a lot denser not only in those areas, but all through the back, because so much seed just went flying in every direction with that battery powered spreader.
At any rate, by the time I was finishing up in front, doing the parking, I was mowing by streetlamp light!
Which reminds me, I still have to take the garbage to the curb tonight.

9:58PM
Okay the garbage is out, and I finally activated that PenFed gold visa card!
You may recall a while back I got the offer from PenFed (Pentagon Federal) in the mail, and they were making me jump through some hoops to qualify, so it wasn't clear if I would make the cut... cuz they're a very high falutin' credit union.
Well, I finally did get a card in the mail, but it was difficult to activate, because their website and app are NOT very user friendly.
But I finally did it tonight, and got the app to work so... we're good to go, and the credit limit on my card is $9000.00!
I think that brings me up to $28,500.00 available credit. It would be 30K, but I have that balance on the Wells Fargo.

One of the nice things about the PenFed card is that it will let me Zelle money to people!
So... that's probably what I'll use to pay Matt to update the fuse box to a breaker box... one of these days!
I'd like to have the new basement hatch door in place before that, however, because they'll be needing to get in and out of the basement.
So... it IS time to get moving on that hatch door.
First step is to clear off the side porch so I can use it to prep the plywood.

Okay, that's my day!
We'll see what tomorrow brings.
