Junebugs see it in, lightning bugs see it out, and all the while, cotton flies through the air like snow, and the puffy white clover flowers dot the lawns and grassy fields.
June is the end of the beginning. Whatever you were doing, between January and now, will come to a stopping point, as you reassess your path.
Because the world, through June, will transform fully into summer... the deep green, hot, high-sun summer... with days so long, and nights so short, you can hardly believe it's real.
And that'll throw you... and slow you down.
Yet, before it's over, those days will begin to shorten again!.. and by June's end, your year will be half over.
It's a vexing month that spins your head a bit and leaves you only half-remembering how you spent it.
------------{=0=}------------
I got hold of Darick, the regional manager, and he says I need to stop in to the main office today or tomorrow to fill out a formal request to return to part time.
So the plan is to do that today, after I clock in at Cloud, if possible.
Fingers crossed and knocking wood that this goes smoothly.
------------{=0=}------------
1:15PM
I paid AMEX down to zero, so... that was the monthly bills.
No balance at all on Discover or the PNC visa.
the Wells Fargo card has a balance of $1,155.00 now, and the minimum payment is $25.00.
So I set up the autopay to take $50.00 a month out of my PNC checking account.
Now, I'm gonna stop using it, and let it auto-deduct that payment in the background for the next several months... twice the minimum, exactly on the due date.
That leaves the car payment and the mortgage, but I have a couple days yet to worry about those, so, for now, the start of month bills are well in hand.
------------{=0=}------------
12:27AM
I clocked in at Cloud, but then was not allowed to leave and go to the grounds & maintenance main office a few miles away, so I'll have to go there tomorrow before work.
It was a hell of a day! They slammed the garbage cans and recycle bins so hard, it took me until 9:30PM to get all the garbage out and the dumpster was crammed to the top!
I got my bathrooms and that was it. Did not vacuum shit! Fuck 'em!
------------{=0=}------------
Back at home tonight, I paid the car payment, and Zelled mortgage money into the BMO account.
Then I double checked all the bills and... they're all working with autopay now.
Nothing has to be manually paid anymore... except the HELOC, but I have a reminder for that. It's more like the 10th.
So the only outstanding balance is the Home Depot card, which is too new for me to make a payment yet. But I'll probably just pay that off in full next month. It's not much.
--<>--
I got a new pre approval for a visa card from some outfit called Commerce Bank, in the mail today.
Should I go for it???
--<>--
Okay, I went for it! I was approved for the Commerce Bank Visa, and the limit will be $4000.00... Not bad!
Maybe I should use that for the June projects.
Filling holes and cutting trees is mostly paid for. I have the dirt, and the grass seed and mats... hoses, sprinkers, timers, tamping tool, etc.
All I need is a wood rack ($90.00) and some artificial turf rugs ($70.00)
And then for the basement hatch door... haven't priced it out, but it'll be in the neighborhood of $150. So... that comes to $310.00, but we'll call it $400.00.
Don't know what the July and August projects will cost yet, but let's say that the whole summer of projects comes to... $1500.00.
This card is 0% interest for 15 months, so... throw the summer projects on the Commerce Bank Visa... pay like $50.00 a month until later in the fall when I'm full time again, and then pay off the remaining balance!
But Pat... I hear you ask... What about the September, October, and November projects?
Well, my sweet boy... I'll have another credit card by then!
--<>--
But seriously, I'm mainly concerned with the summer right now, because I'll be part time for a lot of it.
So if I can get $1500.00 worth of materials to do summer projects, and only pay $150.00 for them over that time period... that means I'm not blowing the PNC loan money.
That, in turn, means I have more time to increase my income... either by doing handyman work, graduating to maintenance with GeoStaff, or finding a new employer altogether.
But if I go that third route, it'll look better if I've been with Geostaff at least a year... which means, after September 15th... and, ideally, am still employed with them at the time I'm applying.
--<>--
It might seem like a step backward to go back to part time, at this juncture, but... free time itself is an extremely valuable asset!
Especially in a seasonal situation, where a bunch of landscaping has to be done right now, when it's summer!
I could slave in the 100F brick oven of Gingham all summer and get a lot less done in the yard... and then have to wait until 2024 to pick it up again.
Or... I could get it all done this summer, and next year, all I have to do is mow!
And having a nice yard improves the monetary value of the property too!
--<>--
I wouldn't be able to do any of this if I hadn't spent 14 years at the same job... and had the same bank for 10 of those years... and lived here with Dad for 8 of those years.
Everybody loves to see a history!
Same job! Same residence! Always pays the bills on time!
And when that stretches beyond a decade... it's an ancient history, as far as anybody's concerned. And they love it!
This is why my bank put 34K in my savings account... and why credit cards are falling all over themselves to approve me in ten seconds.
It's also why Dad signed the house over to me on his death bed! Because I had his back to the very end!
It's why I got the job at Geostaff so fast... and why I'll probably have to fight to go back to part time for the summer... because they know a good employee when they see one!
--<>--
If you don't come from wealth, and you're not a goddam superstar talent, the best way to get ahead is to spend a decade establishing a solid history!
I did that, and I'm leveraging the hell out of it right now, to get through a very sketchy transition from one chapter to another.
I'm walking a tightrope, yes... but THAT is my big, long, balancing pole!
And I'm working up a pretty broad, bouncy safety net too... in available credit!
I'll get to the other end of this tightrope, by Jove!
--<>--
Okay... gotta be up earlier tomorrow so I can go do that paperwork and secure the part time summer of my 2023 dreams.
Happy June!
