DST Begins

Didn't do much last night. Took it easy. And smoked some weed, for the first time in many months!

It was very weird to be openly smoking a bong in the back room without even worrying about the smell!

Back in the 1990s, smoking weed in this house was a huge secret that I had to be very careful about because both Mom and Dad were very opposed to it!

Now, not only are they gone, but it's legal!

Stayed up too late, especially with the time change. I did manage to set the new kitchen clock ahead, before I went upstairs to bed.

Now it's 4:30PM and I've barely started my Sunday.

Today is as gloomy as yesterday, but also colder and drizzly, with patches of snow in the grass here and there.

Kind of weather that makes you feel lazy.

The WIFI rebooter texts me whenever it reboots the extender. It's already rebooted it ten times today, since midnight. I'm trying to get a firmware update, but... it's not going well.

I also have to reconfigure that smart plug for the garden lights.

------------{=0=}------------

6:00 PM

I gave up on the smart plug. Every time I reset it, it kept going back into alarm. I tried a spare one, but... it's designed for 2G WIFI!

Can't connect it to the 5G WIFI that's right up the stairs, but the 2G channel of the extender is too far away, and the extender's always going down anyway (No, I had no luck updating the firmware).

I searched for a 5G smart plug, but... they are rare and expensive.

I think it's just that smart plug and smart bulb technology isn't really there yet! Those bulbs in the kitchen are a bit wonky. Sometimes they don't respond.

So, I just put the garden lights back on a mechanical timer... now set to turn on at 7PM and off at 7AM. The best solution is to get them hooked up to a photo sensor, but that's kind of an ass pain to wire up.

So... I mean the two problems are under control? The garden lights will be off during the day... mostly. And the extender is being rebooted, but... it's still going down a lot.

Time to go get gas and beer.

------------{=0=}------------

7:05PM

Opening the first beer of the evening. Garden lights didn't come on quite at 7PM. I had to bump the timer ahead a couple clicks. Should be good now.

No fun getting gas in such yucky weather.

Set the car clock ahead an hour.

Found out when I got home from the liquor store that this computer out here in the back room ALSO is not compatible with 5G WIFI!

Could have sworn I was using it before I had the repeater (which has both 5G and 2G) but actually no! Last time I got online with this machine before Tim left, was when we still had Dad's old DSL WIFI!

So... I can't go online with this machine unless the repeater is up!

See... the repeater and it's rebooter are plugged into that power strip I mounted to the wall behind the stove, and the power strip has a switch... so I'd killed the whole power strip earlier to... ya know... give the repeater a break to cool all the way down?

That seems to help it but... while it's down the cameras and this computer are offline!

I did not know this day was going to be so much about tech issues!

Basically, my two main issues are:

1) My fancy 5G fiberoptic WIFI is TOO COOL for older machines, and pretty much all smart devices, like plugs, and cameras!

2) My Netgear repeater overheats too easily!

I guess the best solution is to just buy a better dual band repeater... or two!

BUT... I've got bigger fish to fry, and things are manageable as they are, for the time being so I'm just gonna put that better repeater on the back burner this week.

------------{=0=}------------

Daylight Saving Time, this year, has no meaning to my brain!

I just started this new work schedule, which means that I haven't started drinking until midnight! That's a big shift away from cracking the first beer at 7:30PM on the weeknights.

And when I was part time, I would crack the first beer on a weekend night at 5:30PM.

So by that logic, I should now be cracking a weekend beer at 10PM... which still feels ridiculously late to start drinking.

But tonight I cracked it at 7PM... which would've been 6PM... and...??? Like...???

All I know is, this coming week, it's gonna be a challenge to be out in that back yard with the pets at the new 11AM, and have that three hours before work to get stuff done.

So yes... DST is gonna cause a bit of a setback, as I try to get this new life off the ground, here in March. So for that reason, I DO agree with the people who say it's a pointless pain in the ass!

8:10PM

Doing my laundry now. Gotta trim my beard and take a shower around 9:00.

I went to the ridiculous length of setting up a fan next to the repeater. This calls for a photograph!..

And yes, I did put googly eyes on the repeater... whom I guess should be named, Peter.

At any rate, that fan looks like it's mounted to the wall, but it's not... it's just resting there.

As you can see though, all of Peter's lights are green, which means he's happy, for the moment!

Before the fan, that lower left LED kept going orange, which means the device itself... Peter... is not feeling great.

If airflow is the issue, that fan should do the trick. As you can see, it's not blowing air onto Peter, but rather, sucking air away from him.

If this works, that's great!.. but it's STILL ridiculous as hell!

------------{=0=}------------

11:00PM

Okay, it's been five hours since the rebooter last texted me at 6PM, before I implemented the fan. And since 8:30, I've taken out the garbage, done my laundry, trimmed my beard, showered, and worked a little on what I'm writing about the history of the house.

In the five hours since that 6PM text, the repeater's been fine!

I did test having the fan on low... but that LED labled, device, turned amber, meaning trouble!

So I put the fan back to medium, and... everything's been great since then!

It's a goofy set up and a stupid waste of electricity, but if it works?..

--<>--

Okay, I just broke down and mounted the fan on the wall with a couple screws. Thankfully it's base was set up for that. But I still didn't want to actually commit to mounting it tonight!

I did so because it did fall from it's perch, as soon as I touched the oven, to turn it on so I could bake some dinner.

So... now the fan is secure, and... I guess we're testing to see if the heat from the oven has any effect on the repeater.

------------{=0=}------------

1:25AM

Hard mount of the fan was a few inches too low, and to the right of where it had been perched, and that did cause the repeater to gradually heat up over the next two hours.

It didn't quite go down, but the, device, LED was RED!

So, drunk, and a bit sleepy after eating dinner... I re-mounted the fan closer to the repeater.

This has been a very ridiculous exercise all day, with the repeater, but I'm gonna let everything run overnight, and see how many texts I have from the rebooter in the morning.

Maybe it will be zero, and the repeater will still have happy green LEDs tomorrow. Or not. We'll see.

Everything else is done. I'm just drinking beer, watching TikTok, and winding down before bed now.

With any luck, I'll be in bed by the new 3AM, and be up and around before the new 11AM in the morning!

Happy DST!
