Rainy Day

It was chilly and rained all day and night. I knew the dog would not want to go for a walk when my alarm went off, so I slept in.

The garbage guys came, but did not pick up any of our bulk items... rolls of carpet, a broken comfy chair, five extra bags, and a dumb little end table. There was a pick up truck parked on the street in front of all that shit when the garbage truck came past, and it was raining so... I think the garbage guys said, "Fuck this!"

They're probably tired of doing the extra work at this house every damn week.

I called and they said they'd send somebody to get the crap tomorrow.

Didn't do much else today, except tell my supervisor that March 6th will be my first day going full time.

I spent the rest of the shift trying to picture how I'm gonna paint the living room, hallway, and Dad's room... eventually, after the plaster is all patched up.

Above are the rugs I picked out for the living room and bedroom (Dad's room).

On the left is the living room, and on the right is the bedroom. Matching prints, but inverse color schemes.

Inset is the two colors I'm picturing for the wall and trim colors. A darker blue, and a light sandy gray.

The idea is to have the two rooms reversed... with the living room having dark blue walls, but light sandy gray trim, and ceiling.

In the bedroom, the walls are light sandy gray, but the trim and ceiling are dark blue.

And then the hallway, which is outside the bedroom, and which leads to the living room, can be one or the other of those schemes. Or some combo, like... light sandy gray walls, but also light sandy gray ceiling, and dark blue trim? Not sure yet.

But those three areas will employ those two colors.

As I've said before, this is a 150 year old house, so the living room isn't really a living room... it's a front parlor. right now it's a monochrome white for walls, trim, and ceiling. But I think the dark blue walls in there would make it a more interesting place to hang and chat, or watch the traffic out the front windows.

The bedroom behind it has, for decades, since it was my bedroom, had white walls, and black trim, and a black celing.

That's a bit severe, but I think the dark ceiling and dark trim in that room should remain the norm. And having it be the reverse of the front room... with the reverse rug... I think tie that part of the main floor together, and feel like a nice twist.

I also bought matching blinds for both rooms... with two inch slats, faux wood texture, in mahogany... because it was either mahogany or white, and fuck white!

But this tells me that the laminate flooring... which will eventually be in both rooms and the hallway... should be a darker wood tone that complements the blinds.

The orignal floorboards are already exposed now in the living room and hallway, and... they're not great! They're kinda flimsy and creaky and they've been painted several times with lead paint so... they can't be sanded, and probably wouldn't be worth sanding.

So, the idea is just to cover it all with laminate wood planks. But right now that's just too expensive.

Still, with the walls patched and smoothed, and the paint job, the rugs, and the blinds... those three areas will be pretty solid, once the flooring does get done.

There are also concerns about the electrical, and the windows in those rooms.

I am hoping to have a breaker panel brought in this spring, which will allow me to run new circuits, and new outlets to that area.

And as for the windows, I found out that you can get external storm/screen combos that just screw on to the outside... leaving the ancient sash windows on the interior in tact.

That's cheeper, and easier, than installing new windows, and it makes them more energy efficient... but also allows the old windows to remain, and testify to the houses age and history.

So, the plan is to buy four of these external combos and install them myself.

This means that before I paint the window trim, I have to cut through a century of older paint jobs and get those sashes to actually open up again!.. so that when the combos are installed, I can actually get fresh air in the living room for the first time in... seventy years or so!

I'm hoping to have this much all done by October, when the family reunites for Dad's official funeral and burial.

With the refresh I've already done to the kitchen and the back room, it only leaves the music room untouched.

But the music room is gonna be a storage room while all this is going on, and can't be dealt with until the family reunion is over, because people will be picking through the bric-a-brac in there, to see what they'd like to take home as mementos of Mom & Dad.

I'll have seven months to do all this... and get the mulberry trees and brush out back cleaned up.

In other news, Snoop & Prowly continue to be doing fine with the cat doors and their new freedoms. Nobody's run away, or gotten into any trouble.

But they do hiss at each other when they're in the same room, which is upsetting, because they were the best of buds as kittens.

But they're both processing a lot of changes right now, as they're both hitting adulthood.

For five months, their whole world was the upstairs with me. But over less than two more months, they've been introduced to the downstairs, the basement and crawl space, and the great outdoors, so...

...my hope is that after Tim leaves, and things settle down, and the spring comes, and they have time to process everything... that they'll eventually get along again?

On the Dog front, I will have to start sleeping downstairs during the week, and have a computer and desk down there to occupy myself after work every night... so that she's got as much company as possible.

But she is showing her age in different ways so... hopefully she hits the natural end of her lifespan this year?

I'm willing to wait it out, but I'm far from ready to just abandon the upstairs.

That's what everything's looking like on a Wednesday in late February 2023.
