Transfer Underway
Thursday, February 16th, 2023 11:47 pmToday was finally the day that I got back down to City Hall, and handed in the paperwork to get that damn City Transfer Stamp!
I'd written about how those forms were designed for a sale of a home between two living parties, which had thrown us for a loop.
But back on Sunday night, Feb 12, I finally just filled them out, putting in "deceased" for every spot that asked for Dad to do a living person thing, and wrote, "Transfer on Death," for the space asking for the type of deed.
Sale price... zero dollars. The county already stamped it as a tax exempt transaction.
SO!... the top priority was to take it to City Hall on Monday the 13th!
But on Monday the 13th, I just... couldn't get up early enough, after the weekend.

On Tuesday the 14th, Valentines Day, I did get up earlier, but made the mistake of walking Yvette first, which meant that I wasn't at City Hall until Noon, and there was only one window open for service (lunch hour) and a long wait for the one woman who was at that window doing her business.
I waited for half an hour, but just before the woman was done, a bunch of people came in through the exit door, and started cueing up near the window... and one of them jumped in to get the clerk instead of me!
Nobody did anything about it, so I stormed out!

On Wednesday the 15th, I got up even earlier, determined to leave the house the second my coffee was made and I was dressed... but when that second came, my phone rang, and it was Kate... my old friend, who I've been trying to get in touch with since last December, when Dad was dying.
Kate's been going though as much bullshit as me, over that time period, but now that she was cold calling me... and I was awake, dressed, and had just made coffee... I had to take the call!
Kate and I caught up over the next couple hours, and that left me in a good mood the rest of the day.
After that call, but before work, I had time to take down the Valentine's Day door hangings, and unplug the outdoor winter lights from their timers, before hanging up the Saint Patrick's Day door hangings, and changing the bulb in the front stoop lamp to a green one!
Gotta keep things current!
Also found a bill in the mail from the Beacon News... Dad's newspaper, that's been piling up on the lawn every day since he first broke his hip!
It's been a huge nuisance to keep picking them up, by the armful, and throwing them away every few days, these past two and a half months, but it's been impossible to find a number to call and cancel... and they only send a bill every other month!
So, using the phone number and account number on the bill, I finally cancelled the goddam Beacon News!
And as Tim said, that was truly the end of an era!
It's been coming to this house for about sixty five years!

Today, Thursday the 16th, I made it back to City Hall, and handed in the papers!
The woman who looked them over was the same woman who'd given them to me to fill out over a week ago, and after parsing them, said it was all good!
I still have to wait five business days before they've done their little investigation to find out if Dad owed the City any money. If so, I have to pay off that debt.
But he probably doesn't, which will mean that next Friday I can finally get the City Transfer Stamp, for a fee of $30.00.
With that on my, Notice of Death & Acceptance Affidavit... I can finally register it with the county... for another $62.00... and the house will be officially mine!

In other news, I've decided maybe I don't need to put Yvette to sleep before Tim goes.
I've really been agonizing over it, and it occured to me on Wednesday that, if I just start sleeping downstairs in the back room after Tim's gone... and move one of my computers down there to use after work, so she has some company...
She might tolerate me being gone for 8 hours a day.
I do still think it's possible to get somebody down there to replace Tim for a while... though it may take some time before that happens. So... if I have to hang & sleep downstairs for a few months... it's worth a try!
Can't undo euthanasia, so... I don't wanna go there unless it's truly the only option!

I also bought two cat doors on Amazon that came yesterday.
I only need one, but that wasn't clear until I had them here to examine how they actually work!
I thought I'd want one to let them out, and one to let them in... because they can be set to only open out or in. But the tabs to set such stops... are easily defeated by cats with any strength.
However, the nice feature is that the bottom of the flap has a hunk of metal that aligns with a strong magnet in the bottom of the frame... which stops the flap from swinging, or blowing open in the wind.
That feature I DO like!
At any rate, I've decided to install one of these cat doors upstairs here, in the small window outside my little bathroom, that opens on to the first floor roof.
This window has been used, in years and decades past, as the entry and exit point for many family cats!
They all instinctively learn that if they go over to the back room roof... which is the lowest to the ground... they can jump off to the ground from there. And then they get back up on the roof by climbing a Juniper tree in front of the music room... which is still there.

Snoop & Prowly are damn near grown up now, and Prowly, especially, has been going crazy trying to get outside for a couple weeks!
It's also damn near spring, and I've got a three day weekend this weekend (President's Day) so... I feel like this is the time for them to graduate to outdoor exploration!
If Dad had never broken his hip, and I'd had time to get them used to collars as kittens, and get them fixed as kittens... then they'd probably not even have the full run of the downstairs, basement and crawl space right now, and I wouldn't be under any pressure to go full time at work.
In that scenario, I'd have all spring to ease them into outdoor exploration.
But my back's up against the wall here! Tim's leaving in ten days and I'm going full time! They're not getting fixed any time soon, and Prowly's going stir crazy!
They gotta get out!
The universe handed me these two cats last August 8th, and then promptly started knocking trees over and killing Dad for the entire time they were growing up!
So... now the universe has gotta take care of them while I'm at work!
But... as I said, every cat who ever lived here (over the past 140 years) was an outdoor cat with no collar who did just fine with their instincts, so... it shouldn't be much different with Snoop & Prowly.
Maybe I can get them chipped and fixed down the road, but... as we get into March and April here... they're gonna be semi-wild beasts while I'm still struggling to get my shit all the way back together.

I ordered a DeWalt 20V jigsaw to do this cat door install, and tonight I picked up a project panel from Home Depot to mount it in the upstairs window.
I'm gonna get a start on the project tomorrow night after work, so that I have all of Saturday, Sunday, and Monday to monitor and coach them, after it's in place.
And it's supposed to be mild and dry on both Saturday and Sunday.
But the Jigsaw is gonna come in super handy for a ton of future home improvement projects in the years to come around here!

With the City Transfer Stamp in the works, finally... and short term solutions for both the dog and the cats, having been worked out...
...The only major thing left to deal with is just redirecting Dad's mortgage and Home Insurance auto-deducts to my bank account, and closing his bank account.
By the second week of March... it's really gonna be just me!
Just my job and my bank account.
Just me at home with my three pets.
Just my car in the driveway.
My house.
My yard.
It's crazy!
But... I'm up for the challenge!
