Dad's Ashes Came Home
Thursday, January 26th, 2023 10:38 pmYesterday, Wednesday the 25th was garbage day, and, as predicted, we did have three inches of snow on the ground that morning, with some grainy sleet coming down as I walked Yvette that day.
After the walk, I shoveled the walks and the driveway, then ran out to Home Depot to get some salt, came back, and salted everything.
Tim was surprised I'd gotten so much done before he'd gotten up.
The garbage guys took our eight extra bags of trash, and three junk items away, and Tim continued to clean in the kitchen. By the time I was home from work, he'd emptied out Mom's old, thrifted china cabinet, listed it on Facebook, and moved it out onto the side porch.
He also ran and got us two huge burritos, for dinner!
Later in the evening, we took down Mom's old window valences from around the kitchen, because they were dingy, stained, and would not come clean in the wash... as they'd been white, and threw them out.
I ordered four new valences on Amazon for cheep, to replace them.
But, as these things go, as soon as I ordered the new valences, I started thinking about repainting the kitchen.

This morning I was actally walking Yvette by 10:15AM!
A fresh half inch of new snow had fallen overnight, and it was colder out, but not too bad, so the walk went on for a while.
Back at home, Tim was still asleep so I actually went upstairs and did my own thing for another hour... which I haven't done in quite a while.
I ran to get cigarettes around noon, and by the time I got back, Tim was up and drinking his coffee.
Now that it'd been over a week since our meeting at the mortuary, I texted Bridget, our contact there, and asked if she knew when we'd be getting the death certificates, and Dad's ashes.
Just after 2PM, she texted back saying they had just gotten both things, and I could come pick them up any time.
I had to leave for work, but Tim said he'd go get them around 3:30PM.

It was a typical Thursday at work, but by the time I left, the temperature had dropped down to 18F, and there was a strong breeze!
I had been thinking about stopping at Home Depot on my way home, to check out paint for the kitchen, but, because it was so bite ass cold, decided to go straight home.
Lucky I did, because Tim had ordered us gyros on Door Dash, for dinner tonight!

But the big news was that Dad's ashes were back home... inside a hermetically sealed, blue marble urn, inscribed with his name.
We spent some time after dinner setting up the urn in the living room, on top of the old cedar chest, as placed between the two front windows. And I hung his art-deco crucifix above the urn, between the windows.
We put his memorial flowers, which we still have, on a small side table next to the cedar chest in front of one window.
On either side of the urn, we placed a votive candle... along with an unopened bottle of Guinness, and a pack of Newports.
Lastly, we placed one of his prayer cards on the top of the cedar chest, in front of the Urn.
That'll be his home memorial, for the next nine months, but I plan to clean up the living room more, and Tim's gonna help with that while he's still around.

The death certificates are important, because we need them to liquidate his car, cancel his AT&T bundle, and other stuff... but most importantly, to register a notice of death with the county, so that ownership of the house officially transfers to me.
Once that notice is filed with the recorder of deeds, it will reflect that this house became mine at 3:33PM, on Tuesday, January 17th, 2023.
3:33PM is the time that Lonnie, the hospice nurse made the official determination.

My goal for tomorrow is to get back to Home Depot before work, pick out two colors of paint, for the kitchen walls, and the trim, and get a gallon of each.
Then over the weekend, we'll get started scraping, taping, rolling, and painting.
As with the back room, the goal here is only to freshen things up!
It hasn't been painted since like... the 1980s, and the walls and trim are both the same bland shade of dingy white.

Tim also sold Mom's china cabinet, for $40.00, so somebody's gonna come take it tomorrow as well.
