Recording Day

Today was cold, gloomy, and windy, with temps back down around freezing. Not the crazy 52F of yesterday, or the mild 45F of the day before... so it was a good thing for Kevin, especially, that we'd gotten Dad's car driveable yesterday.

The big goal this morning was to get the Transfer On Death Deed to Geneva to be recorded by the county recorder, so... after the customary dog walk, and check in with Dad, and with Tim up and around making his own coffee... I drove over to Kevin's Air B&B on Lasalle Street to pick him up.

Together we drove the eight miles north to Geneva and parked at the County campus, and then found our way to Building C, which houses the recorder's office.

The clerk there looked over the papers and said the legal description of the property was not valid... but that was fine... just go down the hall to the... Legally Valid Descriptions of Property Department, and have them correct it for a dollar!

While I did that, Kevin went back to Building A, where there was an ATM, to get the $60.00 for the filing fee... because they only take cash!

No checks! No debit cards! This is the County Recorder of Deeds!.. only cold, hard cash can be used for the matters and dealings over which they preside!

Five minutes later, the Transfer Upon Death Instrument, drawn up by Colleen, as signed by Dad last Saturday, and witnessed & notarized by Jenene and Jenelle, the mobile twins... was recorded by the county.

They put their big sticker stamp on the originals and handed them back to me, after creating their own digital copy for the public record.

The only step left is, after Dad dies, I need to file a notice of death to their office, and, once done... ownership of the house passes to me, by operation of law.

No legal limbo, or expensive probate process!

We made our way back to Aurora and stopped at Jake's Bagels by the train station... a well beloved little restaurant to every family member who's ever visited in the years past... to get breakfast bagels for ourselves, and one for Tim... which we took back home.

My new smoke detector and the wireless doorbell were waiting for me, back home, but there was only time to scarf down my breakfast bagel, before I had to leave for work.

After I was gone, Kevin drove Dad's car, on it's temporary spare, to a mexican tire shop around the block from his Air B&B, to get the main wheel looked at and repaired, if possible.

There was a wait... so he walked to his flat and just chilled for a couple hours.

Turns out the whole reason Dad's tire went flat in the first place was because of a tiny stone lodged between the rim and the tire, that broke the seal just enough to let the air out!

They resealed the tire to the rim, filled it up, and put it back on... for $20.00!

Brian & Karen actually, finally did show tonight... getting to the house around 7PM, to hang with Tim, Kevin, and Dad.

I clocked out of work just before 7PM, but had to stop once for gas and smokes... a second time for cat litter at Walgreens... and a third time for beer.

I got home around 7:40, and went straight upstairs to bring in the cat litter, and let Snoop & Prowly downstairs for another night.

Brian was in top form, in Dad's room with the rest of us gathered around, telling stories and making everybody laugh... like he's legendary for being able to do... in that little window of his first six beers.

His committment to raising morale was admirable, given Dad's state tonight... which had to have been far more frail than he was ready for, so... I give Brian Kudos!

Last night, Dad was still able to grasp his drinks, bring them to his face, and sip them through a straw... under his own power... though it was difficult for him.

But tonight... he was no longer able to do that. He was still alert and could follow, and add to the converstation... but I had to help him drink his Guinness, by holding the straw to his mouth.

He still did drink it... and could just manage to smoke a cig by himself.

But... he's slowly curling up to the left, in that bed... in a way that he can no longer lay flat. His body seems to be trying to revert back to a fetal position... gradually... as days go by.

It's sad, but as I said, tonight with some help, he could still drink, smoke, and take part in the conversation around his bed with... the five of us!

Brian & Karen left around 10PM, with Bri promising to return soon, so... we'll see.

Dad drifted to sleep, and Tim, Kevin, and I, reconvened in the back room for the third night of our triumverate council... as the cats patrolled the downstairs... occasionally squaring off with Yvette... who did, for the first time tonight, venture back into the back room to be with us.

Tim, who, from the back room, had eyewitnessed mice darting back and forth with impunity, across the kitchen, for several days and nights, said that after Snoop & Prowly had been patrolling last night... they seem to have vanished today.

The cats may not be catching and eating them, but... just having them on patrol every night is enough to keep the mice quarantined in their hideouts!

Those hideouts are, no doubt, stockpiled with Good 'n Fun kabob sticks, so... they're not gone, by any stretch, and could be reproducing!

There could be a huge mouse population explosion to come in the near future downstairs.

But... by that point, it'll just be open season for Snoop & Prowly, and they'll have the time of their lives catching and eating real live mice, rather than playing with silly cat toys.

It's either that or the mice pack up and move out... but I don't think that's a thing mice do.

As far as the council goes... we've accomplished most of our biggest goals.

Kevin drove Dad's car back to his flat tonight, because it was too cold to walk... but he'll take it in tomorrow morning to get the emissions test.

After that, he's gonna stop somewhere and buy a toaster, for Tim... because we have a ton a bagels in the fridge, but there's no toaster downstairs!

My own goals for tomorrow are to mount the side doorbell, and the smoke detector, and take down the little Christmas tree in the living room window, and the Christmas wreath on the front door.

Little stuff!
