Enter Kevin
Tuesday, January 10th, 2023 11:55 pmI wasn't downstairs until 11AM again today, but that's how it goes when you're catching up with siblings you haven't seen in person in years.
Tim slept until 1:30PM! And I didn't begrudge him, because he's working thorugh jet lag from Nevada time, which is two hours earlier than here.
I walked Yvette, took care of Dad, and then ran out to buy five more garbage stickers, get some gas, and got more beer and smokes, before returing home around 1PM.
Dad was sleeping, and so was Tim, so I went upstairs and spent my hour with the kitties, before it was time to leave for work.
--<>--
The new box springs Tim had put out on the parking last night, actually got taken by somebody today while I was upstairs with the cats... so that saved me a garbage sticker.
Tim was up when I went to check in on them downstairs before I left.
He said he'd remove Dad's flat tire and put on the temporary spare by himself.
--<>--
It was another routine day at Grape Elementary, but Tim texted to let me know Dad's front passenger wheel had one stripped lug nut, and one security lug nut, that prevented him from removing it!
He sent me photos of the issue, along with links to a type of tool we needed.
And, checking the map, I found that there was an auto parts store just a stone's throw from the school.
Here, I had gotten my gas, beer, and smokes, ahead of time, so that I could go straight home after work but now I was gonna be making a stop at this auto parts store to buy a special socket, for removing trouble lug nuts.
--<>--
Kevin arrived at the house around 6PM... while I was still at work.
He had not been in communication at all with anybody about when exactly he was arriving, but he'd made his way from O'Hare Airport to Aurora, via the Metra train, the walked from the train station to an Air B&B he'd secured downtown, less than two miles from the house.
And after getting settled in, he walked over to the house!
Tim was there to recieve him. The two of them hung out with Dad...
Whatever bad blood there had been between them, vanished!.. as I expected would be the case.
--<>--
After work, I stopped at the auto parts store and bought the sockets, then went straight home.
It was a bit overwhelming for the first hour... catching up with Kevin, while hanging out with Dad... while looking in the basement shop for the socket attachments we needed for the car... while taking out the garbage, because it's garbage night, and getting the dog walked.
I let Kevin borrow my car to go down to the liquor store and get some wine and beer for himself and Tim.
But eventually the three of us settled down in the back room to just hang, and drink, and discuss matters at hand.
------------{=0=}------------
Kevin is a real estate guy who's specialized for years working with seniors, and he said that the Transfer Upon Death Instrument Dad signed on Saturday, as witnessed and notarized, was exactly the right thing to do!
The TUDI is a relatively new legal instrument, but it is valid across the country, and is seen in the real estate industry as the BEST way to insure a seamless transfer of ownership at the moment of death...
Even better than setting up a trust, which, he also agreed, we don't have the time left to do.
He said I should file it with the county as soon as possible, while Dad's still alive, and that, when he does die, the house will transfer to me as a simple function of law, without any fuss or delay.
As for income taxes, he said, as long as I plan to just live in the house, as I have been for the past eight years, there won't be any tax penalty.
Income tax only comes into play if I decide to sell the house, which I won't.
Meanwhile, the bank will have no choice but to let me pay off the existing mortgage, and when it's done... in four or five years... the house is mine free and clear!
--<>--
He said I might want to become a signatory on Dad's bank accounts, but that it might be to late for that, because they'd want him to come down in person... but I already took care of that back in June!
He said I should make sure the beneficiary of his life insurance is changed from Mom (who died in 2015) to me... but I already took care of that, back in 2019!
The last thing he recommended was that Dad needs to sign over his car title to me, to avoid a situation where he dies and ownership of the vehicle goes into limbo... so we DO have to take care of that this week, before getting the registration renewed!
------------{=0=}------------
But the other thing Kevin said, as a guy whose been working closely with seniors for years, is that... a broken hip is always, "The goodbye notice."
He said he thought that as soon as he heard that Dad had broken his hip.
It's just one of those things, that doesn't have a fully satisfying explanation... but, when an octogenarian breaks their hip?.. it's just the end.
And of course, he spent a few hours with Dad before and after I got home tonight, to gauge Dad's situation for himself.
But he's in agreement with me, and as of yesterday, Tim, that yes... Dad's currently on his death bed, and probably has a month to six weeks.
But, also like Tim and I... he agrees this is the best possible way for him to go... in his own home, drinking his Guinness, smoking his Newports, and surrounded by family.
------------{=0=}------------
We hashed out a game plan for the coming week.
Getting those lugs loose, to get the temporary spare on Dad's car is paramount, so that they can drive it while I'm gone... to get the main tire fixed... and do other things like filing the TUDI with the clerk!
The car's emissions check has to be done, and Dad needs to sign the title over to me before we get the new registration, this week as well.
But first thing's first... Kevin was asking about weed, and luckily it's legal in the state of Illinois, so first thing tomorrow I'm driving him to the local dispensery, where, to avoid any snag with him being from out of state, he'll give me the money and I'll buy it for him.
Who knows?.. maybe I can talk him into buying me a little too!
Tim can hold down the fort while we're gone, and Kyangela will likely come to bathe him in that time span.
After that we'll deal with the car... which Tim and Kev may have to complete while I'm on my way to work.
But if they can get that temporary spare on... it's off to the races!
