Big Saturday
Saturday, January 7th, 2023 02:05 pm31F on the final day of Three Spades Week. I'm gonna be doing timestamp updates to this post throughout the afternoon and evening, when I can steal a few minutes to get upstairs.
2:10PM
I was woken by a call from the Notary this morning confirming the appointment for 11AM. But then I fell back asleep and didn't get up until 10:15!
I kinda rushed Yvette through our walk, and back at home, made sure Dad was comfortable and hydrated. Thankfully he was alert and knew what was going on today.
Right at 11AM, I went outside to check, and the Notary wasn't here yet, but the bed platform had arrived, so I brought that in on the side porch. Last item I'd been waiting for, from Amazon.
The Notary, Jenine, arrived with her sister, Jenelle. They were twin sisters, in their late 20s, and very friendly.
We got the document out... Dad signed it... The sisters witnessed it... and Jenine notarized it with her stamp!
The Transfer Upon Death can guarantee the house tranfers to me when Dad passes, but, if it's used that way, I'll have to pay a ton of income taxes for it.
The ideal thing to do is set up a living trust, which would involve a laywer, so we'll try that, but if we don't have the time or the money, then the TUD instrument will have to suffice.
Either way, I'm very happy we got this taken care of this morning.

After giving Dad his pills, and repositioning him to be more comfortable, I went into the back room.
That second mouse trap I set last night worked! It killed TWO mice!
I threw it out in the bin, and I guess I'll set another, but I really wish I could get the cats downstairs to catch mice the natural way!
I gave the window trim it's third and final coat of white... and then the baseboards on three walls their second coat. After that I cleaned the walls in the corner where the desk sits, and gave those baseboards their first coat.
When all that was done, I went in to see Dad and gave him a good shave with the electric clippers, and combed his hair.
After that... back into the back room for another coat of paint on all the baseboards, and then a run to the liquor store to get beer for both me and Dad.
And now I'm upstairs chilling with the cats.
8:45PM
Spent a good four and a half more hours downstairs getting the backroom done!
Removed all the masking tape from around the tri-window trim and it looks great!
Got the baseboards finished, washed the floor, and took Yvette for a second walk.
After that it was time to unpack the stuff from Amazon, starting with the area rug. Once that was down, I inflated the air mattress.
The platform doesn't work with the mattress, however, because the mattress is so thick that, when on top of it, it's absurdly high off the ground, and it's also too bouncy to sit stable on it.
But that's okay, because someday I'll buy a normal twin mattress and have the platform ready to go.
After putting the sheets, pillows, and comforter on the bed, I spent quite a while fussing about the arrangement of the different stands and chairs, and then I hung the divider curtain.
While this was going on, Dad got a visit from a friend and fellow eucharistic minister from his church, who gave him communion and chatted with him for a while.
There was also a dog walk in there, and I took a break to hang with Dad myself for our usual 7:30 smoke and beer together.
And then, the final task was to re-hang all the pictures and wall hangings in the back room... and put all my tools and shit away.

Now I'm back upstairs with the cats, and I just got a text from Tim that he's at Midway airport!
I'm gonna chill up here for the next couple hours as he makes his way from there, to Union station, to the Aurora Transportation Center, and finally to the house.

Also managed to complete a new Ace of Diamonds. I didn't have much time at all to focus on this one, but I think it's an acceptable draft.

2:20AM
Tim finally got here at midnight. I had ordered a pizza that arrived at 11PM, and we did eat it cold, which was fine.
We hung out with Dad for a while in his room, and then I hung out with Tim in the back room for a while. It's obvious that gas wall heater is not doing it's job at night. It was a bit chilly back there.
Tomorrow we're getting a space heater, and then I'll try to figure out what's wrong with the gas heater.
Everybody had a long day.
Tomorrow is a new day and a new week.
