Finally Friday

It was 24F out there today, so everything was solidly below freezing. Yesterdays inch of snow had subimated into a powdery dusting today, and there were little slicks of ice on the pavement, where melting water had pooled yesterday.

Dad was a bit more lively and responsive this morning, which was a nice sign. But we didn't get any visits today.

I cleaned the back room walls, then did the masking tape around the trim of the rear tri-pane window overlooking the back yard. And then I had time to paint the trim with the light gray I had on hand.

Standing and looking at the painted trim, in silence, I heard a mouse rustling around beneath the stack unit in the laundry closet... so I set a mousetrap.

It was a nothing day at work. All the cleaning had gotten done a couple days ago, so on this last day of Christmas break, all alone in the building, I picked up a pizza for myself and ate it in the custodian's office watching TikTok.

Back at home, Dad was still doing well. We hung out for a beer and a smoke together before I returned to the back room.

The mouse trap I'd set had been sprung, BUT... it so happened that a strip of trim above the spot actually stopped the arm, so that it did not shut and kill the mouse! And all the peanut butter on the bait tray was gone!

DRAT!

I set it again, in a different spot. So we'll see if the mouse falls for it again.

My light gray was dry but... just way too similar in hue to the light blue of the walls! No contrast! So, grudgingly, I got a can of white paint from the basement.

The white will make the trim pop, but... it's shitty paint that takes three coats to fully cover!

So I got the first coat, and also started taping the base boards and doing their first coats in white. Then I hung out with Dad for a while, to let the first coat dry, and went back to do the second coat on the window trim.

By the time I was done, it was almost 9PM, and the poor kitties had last seen me at 10AM, so I came upstairs, where I'm writing to you now.

I'll have all day tomorrow to finish with the back room, as Tim won't get here until about 11PM.

The windows trim needs a third coat, the baseboards will need several coats, but... when it's done, that white trim will provide a nice contrast to the light blue of the cleaned walls.

After I wash the floor, it'll be time to roll out the area rug, and start unpacking the mattress, it's platform, the bedding, fan, power strips, and curtain.

The stands in the living room that came out of the music room will go into the back room, after the contents of their drawers are emptied into plastic storage bins I have in the music room.

There is one other lamp to clean up, and then I'll have to rehang all the pictures I took down and cleaned, and hang the curtain.

But once it's all done, the room should be a nice place to hang out!

The notary also comes tomorrow at 11AM, so that is also a huge deal! Hopefully the signing of the TUDI goes well, and then we'll finally have a legal anchor for tranfering ownership of the house to me after Dad's death.

As I've said before, the house has been in the family since it was built by my great great grandfather, and his son, in 1875. It went from the father to the son, and then from him to his daughter, who is my father's mother.

Gramma sold the house to Dad & Mom shortly after they were married, in the 1950s, and now I'm the one who's gonna take it over for my generation, here in the 2020s.

What happens after me is not clear, however, since I have no kids, and no other family remains in the area.

But Tim has seven kids, and one of his daughters is pregnant with her second kid. And between my other siblings I have five other neices and nephews, some of whom may have kids as well.

So... there's still a chance somebody will end up living here when I'm old, and take a shine to the old shack. But if so, that's a story for some other distant chapter of house history.

Cleaning up the back room is bringing back a lot of teenage memories, as that was my bedroom from about age 15 to 22, which was the late 1980s & early 1990s. And in the peak of those days, when I had five million friends, we all hung out back there!

Tim was part of that whole scene, because we're only two years apart, so all of our friends were mutual friends, and we were in a band together for a few years as well, while the back room was my room.

So I'm sure he and I will be doing a whole lotta reminiscing in that room while he's here, and I'm looking forward to it!
