Chime Test 5!
Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022 06:18 pmWow!.. So, after yesterday's entry, I was busy the rest of the day and night!
I brought my two keychimes down into the shop and replaced the coffee-lid sails with paper plates, and holy crap! Outside, in about a 10MPH wind they were going CRAZY!
So crazy, I had to bring them back down into the shop, to wait for the wind to die down later in the evening.
But while I was down there I grabbed a roll of square-grid chicken wire and cut out a piece big enough to make a basket for the S8.
Kinda like working with bendable wire graph paper! Using the S8 for size reference, and a black sharpie, I marked out the grid that would be the basket floor, and then marked out what the walls would be.
Took a while to snip out the T-shaped section, but after that I used a ruler to help me bend the sides up into the third dimension. I wanted the sides to be five squares high, but I made them ten squares high, so I could bend them all back down at the mid lines to leave a clean edge on top with no barbs.
At the corners, I bent the barbs in a zipper like fashion so that they held together.
the only exposed barbs were now at the bottom, but in stead of bending them under, I clipped them short, and then ran a leather string all around the bottom edges, looping in and out of each square as it went around.
The result looked amazingly good!

After a break to walk the dog, and run a few errands, I returned to the shop after dark to attach the leather suspension strings for the basket, and then I hung it from the boom stand and started leveling it the same as I do for the chimes.
But instead of using a level, I just put the S8 into the basket running a bubble-level app, and my god!... that looked so cool, I made a TikTok about it (mrsnoozefest)!
After I got the basket levelled, finished off with a loop at the top and then attached a key ring. Then I hung it from the hook at the bottom of the tripod and voila!

I now have a basket to suspend the S8 an inch over the ground, and because it's all chicken-wire, there won't be any sound reflections, or blockage of sound from directly below.
I think this is gonna get great results!

While working on the basket, I had the idea for, interchangeable sails for the key chimes. So I tied key rings to the bottoms of the clapper strings for both chimes, and then set up my two paper plates, and my two coffee lids with hooks to hang from those rings.
The lower the wind speed, the bigger the sail. The higher the wind speed, the smaller the sail.

At any rate it was nearing 11PM, so it was time to get the chimes out to the SCOP, with the paper plate sails, and set up the S8 on the tripod between them for another test recording.
The wind was only 7MPH tonight, same as the previous test, where they'd barely made any sound at all.
But tonight they were extremely active!
Unfortunately, it had been 98F all day, and was still 85F tonight, so the air conditioning was blasting, and I couldn't turn it off for an hour, because my dad and his dog inside would've noticed the indoor temp going up to like 78F, and it would've taken too long to cool that all back down afterward.

Still, the results of the test were phenomenal!
With the two key chimes close to the S8, with big sails, under low wind conditions, I got a recording with NO wind sound, and super loud, super active chimes!
This was a proof of concept! The key to recording the chimes is to do so in low wind, with big sails... but also on a night when it's below 72F, so that nobody's running AC.
I tried to use a profile of the AC noise to do noise reduction, but doing so made the chimes sound warbly. So the track uploaded to SoundCloud has no noise reduction.
This bodes well for later in the summer, when the wind will at most be 1 or 2MPH. With huge sails, I could get the chimes to do just little dings here and there from time to time... to spice up the cricket recordings.

Not sure what I'll do tonight. It'll be cooler, but we may have Amtrack doing their inspections in the train yard.
