So, on Friday 18, Helen, our shift lead was off, which meant that I had to take the radio! And since I'd done that once before, I knew... I'd be hearing both sides of the conversation between the office, and the outside crew, at Bus Call!
I wrote a while back about how I intended to record a SONO of the bus call, sooner or later, but then I spent several weeks pondering how best to capture it.
So much happens around the building at Bus Call, how could I do it all justice?
But today I realized, I had my perfect chance! Not only because I had the radio... but because it was the Friday Bus Call before Thanksgiving Break! These kids were leaving not only for the weekend, but for a whole week off next week!
Of course I didn't have the S8 with me, but... I did have the S9... which is my current phone! And it did have Field Recorder installed on it so... I just started recording, and walked around through the building... amid the chaos... holding it in my hand.
Nobody thought it was weird or even really noticed me, because it's just such madness getting all the kids out to their rides.
The radio was on my hip, so that stays constant as I roam... and the PA speakers are all over the building, so they too stay constant as I roam.
The raw take was 25 minutes, but after editing out the dull spots, it's a tight twelve minutes, with no footsteps sounds or any other indication of myself in the recording... so that it sounds like you're just floating through the building.
Twice I take the elevator, and both times, you hear an exchange over the radio as I'm riding up to the second floor. You follow some kids down a stairwell inbetween that, and at a different point, also sail through the gym.
The Radio and PA speaker carry the story, but in the latter third, I actually left the S9 to sit on a little side table in the hall, and walked away from it... which allowed me to capture a beautiful little conversation between a teacher and her student who was waiting for his bus to be called.
In that latter third, that one hallway kinda empties out as the final busses are called and it ends with just two teachers saying, "I'm outa here!"

I feel like this is a sensational recording!.. way cooler than I ever imagined a SONO could be!
It's nostalgic, it tells a story, it's full of energy, and it's even funny!
I don't think I'm ever gonna duplicate the success of this track!

In the editing, I was careful to keep the radio conversation and PA announcements chronological, and I did not omit any radio or PA audio... yet, the story on that front is a little confusing.
The woman in the office seems... a bit confused at times.
At the start, she's radioed that; Child Time, Kinder Care Montgomery, Stafford, Ebraheem, Alina K, and 2S, have arrived.
But when she responds, she says, "Carmello," in place of, Stafford.
A couple other busses that are radioed as having arrived, never get called over the PA... and you wonder if there was some unheard cell phone conversation coordinating them instead.
But then she's asked at one point over the radio if she announced such and such a bus, and she says, "I sure did!"
This all lends to the sense of chaos in the building, on this eve of a big holiday break, and also to the comedy... of this seemingly perfect system getting a little broken, despite their best efforts.

But whether we just don't get the whole picture, or they are getting a bit mixed up, all's forgiven because of the loving tone in their voices... and from the teachers in the halls.

This track was a joy to edit, and now I'm gonna listen back to it a few more times before bed!
