Earphones

Today was the first day I noticed the fall colors really starting to pop, on the drive to work. Whole trees of orange, gold, and red... but still some green, and still some half & half.

Then halfway through my shift we got a big rain storm, and afterward it was nice and cool out there, with chilly breezes and cloudy skies... the way Ocotober's supposed to be!

I'm trying my best to imprint these memories of starting a new chapter in my life, in the fall, with good feelings, but... the next five to ten days are gonna be a real bottleneck, financially... waiting for my first full check, and then Dad's pension check.

But, last week, I did spend about $7.00 on a pair of earphones, which came on Monday, and today was the first day at work that I used the earphones to listen to music while I did my janitor routine.

Just to define our terms here, headphones are the big fat speakers, connected by a headband, with cushioned cups that surround the entire earlobe.

Earbuds, I'm sure you know are ear peices, almost like hearing aids, that you have to shove directly into your ear canal... and they hurt, and get all slimey with ear wax, and slip out constantly, and get tangled up all the time, and are impossible to store.

Earphones, however, are just smaller headphones, with a thin headband, that rest comfortably on your ears, but do not surround them completely. It's easy to put them on, take them off, or just lift one away to hear what somebody's saying.

Earphones were huge in the 1980s, and still popular through the 1990s, to listen to portable cassette, or CD players. But they were replaced by earbuds in the 2000s, when IPODS came along.

In the 2000s, people were OBSESSED with smaller and smaller tech! The smaller the ipod, the better! And earbuds were that answer to earphones... tiny, hard plastic chicklets you had to shove into your bodily orifices!.. because... we were all gonna just get chips implanted into our brains anyway soon, right?

Smart phones broke that trend of smaller & smaller, because they had screens, and needed battery life. So, through the twenty-tens, they not only replaced ipods, but got bigger and bigger.

But for some reason... earbuds remained the standard... even going to the absurd extreme of airpods! Ridiculously easy to lose!.. Impossible to power!.. and relying on a bluetooth signal which... is just absolute shit sound quality for music.

All that, and... still hard plastic that hurts your ears canals and gets gross and slippery with ear wax!

So... I was like, Fuck earbuds! and I bought earphones on Amazaon.

Oh my god! I cannot tell you how comfortable and lovely it was, to listen to my playlists through those earphones today, as I worked!

I don't know why they haven't come back into style by now, but they are superior to earbuds in every way!.. from comfort, to convenience, to the price! As I said, I bought mine for seven bucks!

As for my music, I don't use spotify, but rather Amazon Music. It's free with Amazon prime, and there's no commercials, so... it only makes sense for an old fart who's been paying for Amazon Prime for years now.

I have three or four playlists I've made over the years, and today I streamed a couple of them right off the cloud, from inside the building... with no signal issues... and after four hours, my phone was only down to 70%!

It really did change the whole experience of going through the routine motions today.

And, as I said above... it was a great way to imprint these memories of starting this new job in the fall... with positive feelings.

I even had the easter egg of a new song I'd forgotten I'd added to the playlist late last year... Crush, by Tessa Violet!

She recorded it several years ago, but I only got around to reviewing her second album last year, and had added that to a playlist at the time, because it grabbed me. But I haven't listened much to any music for a long time, so this was a pleasant surprise tonight, and I had it on repeat for over an hour, as I vacuumed!

When I got home, I re-listened to both her albums, and added a few more of her tracks, and so... Tessa Violet will be the first artist for me who's songs will... only, and always... be imprinted with these heady days of fall 2022... where I am starting a new job, with two new kittens.

Fitting, as her old YouTube handle used to be MeekaKitty... and she's fond of sporting bright orange and bright yellow in her hair, and wardrobe.

I followed Tessa back in the day, on YouTube, but didn't think to look for her music until she popped up on TikTok, briefly, last year.

Her music is part of a playlist that was entirely created from music discovered on TikTok between 2018 and 2020, which I love!

But, I'm gonna have to create a new tiktok account if I want to discover new music, because my existing one has slowly eroded into old farts like me, talking about politics, science, and... like home inspections.

Two nights this week, I did put the S8 out to record for a couple hours. So... a little more material to work with for the Snoozefest 2022 playlist.

But, the odds of a late season warm up, either for a last minute cricket symphony, or a thunderstorm are looking pretty slim, here on the chilly night of the 6th.

Tomorrow's Friday, so... I'm fully intending to devote my Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights to audio editing... and my Saturday day to working on the fallen Mullberry tree out in the back yard.

And tonight's earphone experience has also inspired me to... possibly, try and record a new song. Or... re-record a very old song. I'll be mulling that over this weekend as well.
