After completing two weeks at my new job, I got home on Friday night, September 30th, and... stayed up way too late, drinking too much, just... doing nothing!

Well, I didn't do, nothing... I did worse!.. I listened to my old music!

I used to be a musician, I recorded a bunch of songs years ago, and... twice a year, I wind up getting drunk and listening to my old music. And it never ends well!

I get all into it like, Man these shit if so great!.. pople should of hear this!.. still great TODAY!... timeless, I tell you! Sooo good music I make, those years!

And next thing I know, it's 7AM!

I slept until 4PM!.. which meant the sun was already going down by the time I'd drunk enough coffee to sober and wake up. So I did nothing with the tree out back. And I basically did nothing with my Saturday.

It was bound to happen!.. the reflexive Friday night rebellion to having a work schedule again, after almost two years of freedom.

The, fuck it, reaction, to the different pressures I've been grappling with this past summer... from living on a shoe string, to the responsibility of the cats, dad in the hospital, the new job, the fallen tree.... sooner or later I was gonna just lose a night & day to drinking & blowing off steam.

And as October began, it was safe to do so... because all of these things were finally well in hand.

But today, Sunday October 2nd, Dad and I went out for lunch, and then we went in search of pumpkins to buy!

At the restaurant I searched for, "Pumkins near me," and turned up "Abbey Farm."

Dad recognized the name! Abbey Farm was run by the Benedictine monks of Marmion Abbey!.. Marmion, being the Catholic boys school, out on the edge of town!

Why... those venerable old Benedictine monks had been been selling pumpkins and Christmas trees for decades, going back to the 1940s!.. on their humble acres out there!

What a pleasant little adventure this would be!

We drove out to Abbey Farm, both picturing that when we got there, we'd see a couple monks with pitch forks on an open field filled with pumpkins. It would be just us and them, in the wide open meadow by the gravel road.

Because who knew or remembered such a place in the modern day? And it was so early in the season!.. only the second day of October... and a Sunday!.. a slow day!

We would just walk up, take two pumpkins, and hand them some cash.

They'd bless us with the sign of he cross, and we'd be on our way!

But instead... holy JESUS!.. Abbey Farm is like the pumpkin-spice, Karen & Todd Breeder, holiday tourist trap from HELL!

There was no parking!... we had to walk forever just to get to the gigantically, rustic, cedar shake shingled, cracker barrel building on steroids, with an endless line of white subdivision fam threading through the whole interior of the complex, with strollers, and crying toddlers!

The pumpkin field was fenced off with barbed wire, like it was an ammunition depot in WW2!

There was no clear instructions on how to get in there, or how to pay for the pumpkins... did you pay first? Did you bring them in and pay later? Either way, it seemed like you'd have to suffer in that cue for a good 45 minutes like it was disney world.

Nobody seemed to be having any fun! It was like a nightmare!

We later looked more into Abbey Farm on Google to see that... my God!.. it's not just pumpkins and Christmas trees... they serve Abbey Farm craft beer, and also Abbey Farm wine in their fake Crackerbarrel restaurant, along with every goddam other gimmick and hunk of overpriced merch that you could imagine!

But they're not for profit, and all proceeds go to the monks!

Made me realize why King Phillip of France had to wipe out the Knights Templar, back in 1307! Crafty monks are masters of predatory capitalism!

It was all too much for me and Dad, so we went to a mexican produce market back in town, to get our pumpkins instead!

Back at home, I set them up in the side porch window, facing the street, with a little spotlight on a timer, I'd bought last year, to be our 3D holiday display... with a string of fake leaves and a few decorative gourds thrown in.

And I put up the other Halloween decorations, on the front door, and in the front windows.

I didn't want to go back to work on October 3rd without having gotten this done.

So... we're now fully in October mode.

Next Saturday will be 55F, according to the outlook. That'll finally be cold enough for me to get some serious work done with the tree.

I've had my little lost weekend, so now I'm gonna make it a point not to waste my Saturdays going forward through the fall.

That includes getting back to editing cricket recordings, as well as everything else.
