Let us say that the tree trunk is... the tree trunk.

Off of the tree trunk grow the limbs. Limbs are limbs, and not branches.

Off of the limbs grow the first order branches.

Off of the first order branches grow the second order branches.

Off of the second order branches grow the third order branches... and the third order branches are the ones that have nothing but leaves growing off themselves.

On Friday, I cut off a number of first order branches from our fallen Mulberry, using a chain saw.

Then on Saturday, I went out to break down those first order branches.

Using a large pair of clippers, I cut all the second order branches off the first order branches. And then, using a pair of hand clippers, I cut all the third order branches off the second order branches.

this left me with three piles:

  • Stripped first order branches, that are kind of heavy and unweildy, and must be cut up into firewood.

  • Stripped second order branches that are just, long sticks.

  • A pile of narrow, third order branches with leaves on them.

It's tedious, time consuming work, but... you'd be amazed how little space is taken up after branches are broken down like this!.. and how easy they are to move around, because they're not getting snarled up with one another.

I was hoping to get back out there on Sunday to continue working, but it rained all day Sunday, and most of the day today.

But today, I finally heard back from my employer!

Human Resources finally fixed the problem with my onboarding package... saying it was part of a, "bad batch," of such forms, generated two weeks ago.

I was finally able to fill out all the information, and digitally sign the forms.

So hopefully this means I'll go to my orientation, and even start working, later this week!

It will be nice to finally have income direct depositing into my bank account on the regular, once again!

Dad, meanwhile, is nearly back to 100%!

He's got all his meds, and has been taking them in the correct dosages at the correct times of day. He's walking around doing things for himself, and driving to pick things up at the store, or go to doctor's appointments.

He's being seen by a nurse once a week, and his vitals are always great!

So, I should be able to leave him for four hours a day, to go do my little janitor job, without having to worry.

Snoop & Prowly have been visiting and exploring the downstairs for about an hour a day for the past week... slowly getting to know Dad and his dog.

We're working toward the kitties having full, unsupervised run of the house, for a couple reasons. Firstly, a mouse has been spotted down there, so I'd like for them to take care of mice, rather than having to set traps.

But, secondly, Dad's dog is fourteen and won't be around much longer. So I'd like for Snoop & Prowly to be able to keep Dad company after she's gone.

I still do have to schedule an appointment to get them fixed soon... something I've been too poor and too busy to worry about up until now.

The tree, as I've said before, is going to take months to fully dismantle. But I should be able to make a lot more progress on the days I'm free... once it cools the fuck down and we have a breeze out there.

What I've done so far has given me a better look at how the tree is laying, and how to proceed with it.

Right now, it's laying a bit over the property line with the neighbors to the south, and there is one limb sticking bolt upright off the trunk, that's as tall as it's own tree, being about six inches in diameter!

If I were to cut this limb now, it would fall into the neighbor's yard.

So what I need to do, is strategically remove several other branches and limbs on the north side of the trunk first... so that I can roll the entire trunk back into our yard... which will tilt that upright limb... so that when I finally cut it, it falls into our yard.

I'm sure I'll be working on this tree into December. And then after a break, again in March, April, and May.

As for the recordings... I did record on Friday night, and it did seem promising, though I have not been able to reveiw it yet.

Saturday was absolutely perfect out there, but there were three different parties going on with outdoor music, so I didn't record.

Sunday and today it was too chilly and rainy. But there is another heat wave coming later this week. It's going to steadily climb back into the high 80sF, until next Tuesday, when it's supposed to hit 90F again!

So, there should still be some good hours of crickets to record over this week and next week.

I've written before about playing the, "fuck you's," against one another... and this is a good example of that!

The universe knocked down my old mulberry tree as a huge fuck you, but now... it's put itself into a catch twenty-two! Because if it keeps the weather hot, so that I'll suffer and sweat trying to cut it up... then I get good cricket recordings!

But if it cools the weather down... so I can't get any more recordings... then I'll be able to work on the tree for long periods, in cool, breezy comfort!

It did try to send rain... which has the potential to kill both the recordings and any work on the tree... but that brings the potential for me to record thunder!... or record just plain rain, which can be useful too!

You've got to keep in mind, that the universe does not want to be having to think so hard about all of this!

And it also doesn't want to be working so hard, that it's intentions become obvious!

Like... it could just open a sink hole under the house and destroy me and Dad, the cats and the dog, the house, the yard, and everything!.. but after everything I've written in this blog... nobody would think that was a coincidence. It would've tipped it's hand and proven beyond doubt that it WAS, deliberately out to get me.

When old people talk about having made their peace with God, they're talking about this wrestling match between the universe... which likes to fuck with people... and their counter moves to fuck it back.

At some point, the universe does back off... if you start to make it work too hard to keep you in check.

With me and the universe this year, I started off in the spring just trying to start my own handyman business. And like... my car was stolen! And then I bounced back from that and the economy took a shit, and I wasn't getting any calls.

So, I decided to live like a hermit and go all in on the field recording hobby... which gave me a great sense of peace, and purpose.

And the universe did not like that!

It was doing the whole routine with the thunderstorms vanishing as soon as I hit the record button... which I called it out for, with radar screenshots. So it sent good thunder when I was asleep... which lead to that thundersnore track on phonobook, so... got some content out of it.

It pulled the false fall, but I wasn't falling for it.

So it gave me Snoop & Prowly... to suck up the last of my money and bog me down with new responsibilities... thinking it was being clever, because these were the cats I'd envisioned adopting some day, so it knew I wouldn't turn them away.

But I got a job immediately... which still allowed me time to do my recordings, but enough money to take care of the cats.

And then the universe got PISSED!

It made my Dad sick, then threw a wrench into the works at HR so that I'd be delayed in starting my job! Double whammy! Take that!

But that's where it began working too hard. Because I had time to take care of Dad, thanks to the delay in the job starting.

So then, in an absolute tantrum, it knocked down the old Mulberry tree... leading to the current catch 22 where if it's hot, I can record, but if it's not, I can cut up the tree!

Now, things have gotten so complex that the universe, I hope, is about to lose interest and just call it a win that I have to deal with the tree for the next six months.

But it will cool off, and I will be able to afford replacement chains for the chain saw, and replacement clippers if the old clippers break, and I will... eventually get the tree processed... and get a few more tracks for Snoozefest 2022 produced and uploaded, as life assumes a new normal.
