Milky Way

Moonrise sounded good to me in headphones (as well as loudspeakers) so I went for broke and produced track three of the 2022 playlist, which I've entitled, Milky Way because it's front yard field crickets, near the street, and I'd speculated earlier this year that they prefer the street because they think the street lights and porch lights are the Milky Way.

Milky Way was created by taking my two, 40 minute tracks of front yard field crickets, from August 16th, and August 25th, and laying one over the other.

Neither track by itself had enough field crickets in the foreground to really capture what I was after, but when they're dubbed together, it really creates the intoxicating sound I've been looking for... with several individual field crickets each calling slightly differently, and going into and out of phase with one another.

Noise reduction, using the June silence recording, was applied to both tracks, and the volume of one was reduced to match the other, so the end result sounds very natural.

There are a few wing tappers and check tails here and there adding percussive accents, and the few bush crickets that can be heard are very nicely in the background.

All in all, I think Milky Way is probably the single best cricket track I've ever produced!

I wish they could all sound like this one, just by walking out the door and hitting record!

But the way things have been, I could only capture field crickets this well in the front yard... and only on those two specific nights in August!

And while both recordings were originally two hours each, after removing all the loud car passes and the barking dogs, both ended up only being 40 minutes each... and they had to be dubbed together to get the desired sound.

I'm not sure what Septeber's gonna give me, either.

The past few nights, when I've gone out there to listen, around 10 or 11PM, it's sounded pretty lackluster. But then it seems like they actually start to get going a lot stronger around 1AM to 2AM.

So, waiting until much later at night might be the key to getting some decent material to fill out the rest of the playlist.

If not, I suppose I could always resort to remixing old material from previous years in new ways, with these new EQ and noise reduction techniques.

Either way, I do want to get Snoozefest 2022 up to 8 hours, in the end.

However, the first three tracks together, Dusk 22, Moonrise, and Milky Way, are only an hour and forty two minutes so far!

Maybe I'll make some two hour super mashup of stuff from previous years, just to pad the runtime. I dunno.

In other news, I finally got Dad's prescriptions today... and filed an insuance claim for the fallen mulberry tree, but no word from my employer about the stupid, "Event Reason," glitch that stalled my onboarding before the big Labor Day Weekend.

It's gonna be a busy week sorting that stuff out.
