Orientation Booked

33F and cloudy tonight, going down to 22F.
The weather was all over the map this week, with rainy days, sunny days, cold windy days, back to cloudy... back to sunny... and then this morning it was snowing out, but the snow was vanishing at the ground.
At 36F, even the grass was too warm for the snow to survive there... so the ground just looked like it was raining, but in the air were big snowflakes.
A very rare sight!
The only real news this week was that yesterday, I did book an orientation at Elgym Studios.
Basically, you can't rent time in the building until you do this one-time orientation, which costs $25.00, after which you become a, "member."
Their website says they're a 24 hour facility, so I'm guessing that part of the orientation is to get a pin number to let yourself in?
So, the earliest I could book was FRI MAR 28, from 3PM to 4PM.
But it's paid for, so... I put in for PTO that day, and we'll see.
Aparently, Elgym has been there since 1997 or so?
And they have a long roster of degreed engineers, so... it's not some fly by night pirate ship of drunk dudes, playing producer.
But these engineers cost upward of $45.00 per hour, if you want one!
So... to stay in business 28 years, at those rates... it feels like most of their clientelle have to be trust fund kids or something!
I mean, yer talkin' $270.00 for a six hour session... which is NOT much time to get anything done!
Probably $1300.00 for a decent four-song demo!.. and a whole album would go way over 5K, with mastering!
I mean... 5Ks not that much if you took out a loan, I guess!
But if you're a band?.. who's taking out that loan?
I'm kinda picturing like the bass player, taking out a loan so they can do the album, and then... it goes over budget so the drummer has to foot the extra grand...
And then the band breaks up and the bass player's claiming to own the recordings, but the drummer also owns them a little bit too!
And the guitarist is all bent out of shape, because he wrote the songs, so he holds the copyrights!
But nobody can afford lawyers, so it just devolves into this traumatizing hate spiral, and the recordings never see the light of day!
I dunno!.. this is why I've always just produced myself!
Maybe it's not the most professional sounding result, but... it's affordable, and the shit's indesputably mine!.. to do whatever I want with!
It's also just more fun to do it yourself!
Nobody to argue with!
Elgym's gonna serve as my incentive to wait for an 07 unit, for as long at that takes.
Because it could be months to years?
What I envision is just spending a couple hours here every Saturday, to get the raw vocals down in Audacity, on my little laptop... for one or two songs.
Then I come home... back up the raw vocals... and spend the rest of the weekend experimenting with processing a copy of them... while smoking and drinking my beer.
The cost for the studio space will amount to the same as what an 07 will eventually cost, in extra rent... so it all cancels out!
Elgym will help me to discipline my budget for the eventual 07 unit... and get into the swing of recording vocals every Saturday...
And when I finally do move... the only thing that changes is, I don't have to walk 5 blocks!
