MATTRESS

72F and partly sunny this afternoon.

Saturday, after waking up and having some coffee, it was over to Lamphere's Furniture, just two blocks up, on Lake & Downer, to get my mattress.

The box fit into the back of my van, over the top of all the junk that's still in there.

But among that junk, is my steel dolly, so that made it easy to get the somewhat cumbersom box (about 60lbs) up into the flat.

After plopping the blanket and pillows into the rocker, I pulled the sheet off the old mattress, and stood it on it's side against the wall on the far side of the bed.

I unboxed the new one and let it inflate on the mattress platform, threw away the box and the plastic, then put a new sheet, and the bedding on it, before dragging the old one down to the trash room.

One of the two dumpsters was nearly empty, so I stood it up in there, as I've seen others do.

The new mattress is a couple inches wider, longer, and thicker than the old one, which is nice, but it's SOOO much softer!

I slept on that thing for 10 hours and 26 minutes last night!

I'd forgotten what it feels like to wake up so comfortable in bed that you don't want to get out... or how it feels, after getting up, to not have any shoulder, elbow, or back pain!

That old mattress was like sleeping on top of a slightly convex table!

I slept on that bed... not in it!

And I would wake up feeling like I'd been in a street fight.

This new one's like sleeping on a cloud!

I sink into it, and turning from one side to the other is now as easy as it used to be on the queen mattress.

I stopped in the trash room today on my way out to Aldi, and the old mattress was gone... which is odd, because I didn't think those dumpsters got emtied on Sundays.

So it's possible that somebody else in the building snagged it yesterday?

If so, then it continues it's cursed journey to torture sleeping souls.

Back in January of 2023, when Dad was on his death bed, and I'd flipped the back room into a guest room for Tim, I'd bought him an air mattress... which he only used one night, because it was the worst!

The next day, Tim found this twin mattress on Facebook marketplace, and we went to pick it up in Geneva... from some million dollar home in a secluded subdivision.

The woman said it had been in her guest room, and was hardly used.

In retrospect I know why!

Tim slept passably well on it, the way I have these past three months, but after he left, it sat there in the back room unused until I moved it into Dad's room.

There it also went unused, but... you know... Dad's brooding, malevolent spirit was in there resenting it for several more months... probably casting hexes upon it, as he cast hexes upon me while I was in there recording.

So, it started out just being uncomfortable, but... that mattress soaked up a lot of bad mojo at Melody Manor, over about 16 months.

I was done with it by the end of August, here in the tower, but had to wait another month to finally get the new one.

I could've had Amazon deliver one, but it would've taken just as long, and I didn't want to force some poor guy to lug it in the building.

Lamphere's was only two blocks away, so... even though I waited a month... picking it up and getting it home took about half an hour!.. and I didn't have to inconvenience any delivery guys.

This new mattress was the final element needed to perfect this little flat.

Everything else in here was curated... the best of what I owned, that made sense in the space.

And most of it is stuff, including the decor, I bought for myself over the years, and is imbued with all kinds of memories.

So this place is not just super-efficient, but it feels like home... except for that mattress!

That was just this rectangular rock, dressed up to resemble my old bed, with red sheets, and the old bedding.

So now that I finally have my own mattress... and it's as comfortable or more, than the one I slept on for 23 years... I finally feel at peace here!

And it also helps that October's just about to start!

I could've recorded vocals yesterday, but the mattress stuff kinda prevented me from hitting the ground running on that, first thing.

But I did spend several hours last night piano rolling a new instrumental, based on a combination of two more old songs that came back to me recently.

Tanya, and, Reavis 309, a song about an English teacher I had back at NIU, both date back to around 1990.

Lyrically, both were pretty trite and stupid.

But musically, both had their moments, and they both happened to have the same, sort of, bosa nova type beat to them, and were in the same key... hence the idea of mashing them together as an instrumental.

So last night was the first time I've actually composed new music in FL Studio, here in the new flat.

All the other music I've been struggling to get lyrics onto, was created in the doomed studio at Melody Manor... and hence brings me flashbacks now, whenever I work with it.

Not that I'm abandoning the album.

But it was good to just compose something new... here!

Because it's not just, doing that in this new space, to imprint new memories... it was also the first time I've composed at my proper desk, in my proper desk chair.

So much of what's here was sitting abandoned upstairs for over a year as I camped out in the back room using Dad's cursed computer, on a folding table!

It still feels weird to be, sort of... back in my element as it were... without these feelings of guilt like... Dad is sitting at the foot of the stairs, judging what he hears coming from up here.

Or, Dad is puttering around down there, about to fall on the floor and cry out for help!

Or, Yvette is down there, waiting for her afternoon walk.

Or, it's 7:30 and Dad's waiting to have a beer with me down there, and show me the unfunny Sunday comics, as I do my laundry... and we have to sort out his bills, or he'll overdraft, and they'll cut off the power, and BMO will foreclose!
