YouTube Proof of Concept

snoozefestaudioI had to let my YouTube version of Dusk upload overnight, it was taking so long. And then in the morning, I found that it had failed the final processing because it was over 15 minutes! So I had to verify my phone number and start all over at around 2PM.
And then it took, I shit you not, EIGHT more hours to finally upload and get through processing!
I'm listening to it now, and the sound quality is fine, streaming from YouTube, thank God!.. but now I need to see if any adds pop up in it. It doesn't look like there's gonna be any, but I want to be sure.
The other issue is that, due to some fuck up on my part, the video is actually 42 minutes long, even though the audio is only 22 minutes! That's down to my inexperience with video editing. But if this is gonna be the start of a playlist... I'm gonna have to fix that and re-upload this thing a third time!
So... it's looking like proof of concept, but the uploads are gonna have to be scheduled for when I'm sleeping and working!

Friends on facebook are telling me that with the money I'm paying to SoundCloud I could afford to just make my own website for this shit.
And that's true, but... that's a huge goddam learning curve. You know there's no cheap easy web app out there that lets you stream eight hour playlists from your personal website. Just like there's no cheap easy blog web apps out there.
It's all this corporate modular bullshit that costs money, takes a long time to master, and still doesn't let you have much creative freedom... and none of it's very good for video or audio. Maybe some podcast bullshit might stream a long file, but good luck making a playlist that just goes to the end without any pauses or prompts!
If I go the website route, it means I'm inexorably gonna have to learn modern HTML and JavaScript, and then get sucked into the phone and browser compatability spiral of death!
I know there is new mark up and new script language to allow streaming of audio... but what browsers support it? Few to none! What phone supports it? Probably none!
But assuming I did take on this challenge, we're talking about another two years, if I can find the free time!

The whole point of this easy, free blog was to help promote a SoundCloud channel I already spent three years... on and off... developing.
And it's been working! I mean... since I started this blog, and began uploading Dial content and embedding that here, I've seen at least three or four plays a day, with a few days randomly spiking at 20 to 30!
It's been my little SEO project! This blog is the link in my TikTok bio. It links back to SoundCloud. I also have a Facebook page to draw back the actual friends and family who've had some interest in Snoozefest in past years.
And just those four little corners of the Snoozefest Audio empire have gotten the numbers up.
I mean... up, compared to zero plays for ten months at a stretch. Three plays a day is still pretty insignificant in the grand scheme, but... I mean, the project HAS been working!

Maybe I need to just cool my jets and let this continue to play out. Most of those plays, afterall, have been from SoundCloud strangers who... presumably CAN stream in HD, because they DO pay the ten bucks a month!
And now that I'm branching out to YouTube, it's just one more place I can link back and forth with everything else!
Like so...
Embed the YouTube's and the SoundClouds in the blog. Link back to the SoundCloud and the blog in the YouTube video description. Link to all three from the Facebook. Maybe get a stupid Twitter... I dunno!
It feels like it's a better use of my time to be doubling down on the SEO for something I'm already paying for... than to scrap it all and start over from square one with SquareSpace!

But for even the going SEO project to continue working, I do need actual content! And I'm getting a little worried about that right now!
Out the window on Saturday night (the window's been open for the kittens to sleep in) I heard the field crickets going crazy! And I was like, great! It's finally time! But I don't record on Saturday nights, so we'll get 'em this week!
But of course... on Sunday it was like they all vanished. And tonight they're barely audible!.. and I have no idea why!
And the wing tappers!... same deal!
Both of them are usually in full force by August 22nd, even if it is only 62F out there tonight!
But that's completely beyond my control! I gave them light. I made them rock shelters. I landscaped. I created special baskets and hoists to get closer to them. And... they're just not bringing it!
Can't worry about it tonight. That YouTube upload killed my whole evening and now I have to be somewhere tomorrow to get fingerprinted and meet my new boss!
If the universe wants to give me field crickets and wing tappers in 2022, then it will.
