50F and partly cloudy tonight!

I ended up not recording on Labor Day weekend.

It was still a touch too hot, so I decided to get a new painting project going.

Recall the painting project that was the calendar deck!.. before it got derailed by... events.

But over the week, I've found that painting is just the thing right now!

It is now as it always was, for me... a form of meditation.

Something about September's got me feeling like... it's time for a break!

No writing, no recording... just paint... and live your daily life.

What is it now? How's it shaping up?

--<>--

And my best story for that is... on friday night... when Potawatomi had it's first home football game of the season!

When I clocked out and left... the football throng outside was still massive, and busy... alive with cheer!

But right after the game started, I took a long walk outside from the building, out to the distant football field.

football field?..

Sorry?.. stadium!

The seats around the arena were packed with crazy, happy people!

The foreground was alive with stray teens fist-bumping and talking shit!

The players are on the field, running around as the announcer explains what we're seeing!

The crowd erupts with whistling cheers!

"Touchdown Braves!" says the announcer!

Next thing you know, the marching band takes the field and starts playing... just the best, most in-tune & together football music you've ever heard!

And as I'm walking away, back toward the building, I'm looking at big yellow school busses, and random students running around, and parents and cops...

And the building suddenly presented itself to me as a high school... for the first time!

--<>--

Like, all summer, I knew it was a high school?.. but it was just a big ass building I had to learn... and paint!

In these first couple weeks, it started to feel more... high-schooly?..

But you have not been to high school until you've been to the first home game in September, on a perfect night at 65F, with clouds and stars and a crescent moon rising.

And I was like... Holy fuck!

I am literally IN a high school movie!

How is this real?

How the fuck did I wind up... working at a HIGH SCHOOL?

--<>--

Back in the hospital days, even after working there for years... at least once a week I'd be walking down a hall and think, I'm in a HOSPITAL!

Like, it never truly became normal!

Because it's me, and I'm just... walking around in a building and messing with stuff like I've always done...

But it's a HOSPITAL?

Never in my life before getting that job, did I wonder, What's it like at the hospital tonight?

--<>--

It was incredibly interesting!.. especially hanging out in the emergency room!

But I worked in the operating rooms, MRI, X-ray, kitchen, boiler room... the whole experience from rooftop to basement floor!

It was actually so interesting, that I never once thought, What OTHER public institutions might I learn about next?

And I definitely never foresaw myself at a high school, of all places!

--<>--

When I applied with GeoStaff, I just wanted a janitor gig, and didn't care what the building was.

But with 14 years of hospital experience on the resume'... of course I got hired, because that building happened to be a school!

And hospitals run a tighter ship than schools do!

So anybody who lasted 14 years at a hospital... well, they'll be more than up to this!

That was true, at Cloud.

But at Potawatomi?.. It's a lot crazier!

The dimensions, and complexity of the building were already crazy, but when that bell rings for passing period?... a good thousand teenagers flood into every open space like a flash mob!

It's a little dumbfounding, how each little grade school in the district managed to brainwash these kids well enough... that it would be safe to throw a thousand of them into a single buildng, as teenagers!

--<>--

But this whole entry betrays the fact that I went to a ridiculously small high school!

A stupid, private, Catholic high school, in a century old building, in the middle of the old neighborhood.

Our football field was just a shitty patch of grass with some bleachers on either side, and a crap little mechanical scoreboard!

We didn't have a pool!.. or an auto shop... or a wood shop... or a pottery shop... or a home-ec shop... or a field house... or a theater... or ANY of the shit!

We had like, what?.. 200 students?

My parents were such assholes to send me there!

They blew thousands of dollars to rob me of the public high school experience!

What do you even call that?

It's worth depriving the family of everything, if we can also deprive them of Satan's evil influence!

--<>--

I dunno who to feel sorrier for... myself, or them!

They died after hiding from so many experiences, their whole lives!

I should consider myself lucky that... now that they're gone... the cosmos still cares enough about me to reboot the storyline like it has!

So here in September...

I'm of the mind to accept it, and explore it.

Go Braves!
