Thunder Prep Work

76F and partly cloudy this afternoon.
I'm currently listening to the FLAC of, Sun Thunder 1 in headphones, as playing from the studio computer.
I finally did test vocals for, Never Rains last night, so I can finally start playing around with adding thunder to that song, in the AUP project file.
But I'll get to that below.
I started my Saturday by taking a walk over to the history museum on Downer, and looking around in there while making a TikTok.
I was surprised to see the Blanford Clock in there, because it used to be across the street in the GAR building.
The Blanford Clock is an intricate old grandfather clock that was hand made by a guy from town by the name of Blanford, back in 1905, and it's been this prized Aurora relic for 120 years... which was on display in the public library after his death for several decades.
My Grandma remembers watching him work on the clock as a very young girl.
It not only tells the time, but tracks; the sun through the zodiac, the weekday, date, month & year, and which half of the Earth is in night/day at any given moment.
So it was cool to see it again.
I vaccumed and cleaned a bit around the flat, and took another walk around sunset to get smokes, but basically stayed home the whole day, and spent most of it doing vocals for, Never Rains
I've basically settled into just doing test vocals for one song per weekend until all 10 tracks have vocal versions.
And I figure by that point I'll have learned enough about the process, and exercised my voice enough to go back through and perfect the vocals.
But I'm happy with the system I have going for all this, right now.
Last night I actually went back to the FLP to tweak the music three times, and updated the resulting WAV in the AUP project with no issues.
And this is how I know it's safe to go ahead and add thunder to the AUP, because even if the vocals or the music change later, my thunder track can stay.
It's long been my vision for Never Rains to punctuate the song with thunder at different points, and add rain thorugh the interlude... as well as an umbrella sound effect, which I'll be recording myself.
We're talking about thunder, of course, that I recorded over the past five years at Melody Manor.
All of it was on my old PC, which is now in storage, but before moving out, I transferred it all to an external drive, which is currently hooked up to the all-in-one I'm writing on right now.
So I had to copy the tracks onto a thumb drive that's now plugged into the studio PC... so that I can work with it on that machine to throw into the music.
But looking through the original Snoozefest folder, I found some thunder WAVs from 2022 that have never been edited down into a Snoozefest FLAC.
There are notes for some of them, to tell me what's on the WAVs, but for the final one, recorded in August of 2022, the TXT just says, "Some good thunder on this one, look through it!" Because I didn't have time to note it out... cuz Dad was in the hospital and I had to be downstairs for a week to sit with Yvette.
And I had this realization that this was the first time in TWO YEARS, that I'd opened this folder... sitting here at my own desk... with nothing pressing to worry about!
Like, since August of 22, it's been... dad in hospital, fallen tree, starting new job, Good N Fun financial crisis, broken hip crisis, death and aftermath of death, home improvement prep for reunion, refi-catastrophe, foreclosure crisis, moving, and prolonged closing on the house sale!
And that closing was only 17 days ago!
It made me think maybe I should just settle for what I've got right now and forget about buying the damn house back!
Today I also had to go back and do building checks again, as Cezar's vacation doesn't end until tomorrow.
So, just like last Sunday, I started my day in the empty high school for two hours, then went to Aldi, got gas, got smokes, and finally got back here... where I'm listening to the thunder tracks as I update my blog.
The new school year begins this coming week, with teachers showing up on Wednesday, I think, and students on Thursday.
I'm all clean & shiny, and the laundry's been washed, dried, and put away.
After going through the best of the raw thunder WAVs, I've islolated the ten best thunderbolts, and copied them into a new AUP file.
The next trick will be to condition these 10 clips to have a similar bass/treble profile.
Most of them have rain embedded in the clips, so I'll have to run a clean rain track under it all, to blend them in with.
It's gonna take a little doing to make this thunder track work in the song, without shitting up the music.
I gotta say, I'm very glad I spent some of my money last year on a PC, software, and other equipment for recording music!
Because it's the ONLY shit I have left!
I remember thinking that if times were tough I'd have the recording studio, and the fire pit to occupy myself with.
But I certainly don't have that fire pit anymore!
