Fool's Fall
Sunday, August 14th, 2022 11:30 pmFor it being August 14th, the weather today?... was otherworldly. There were no storms, nothing crazy happened. But from the moment I walked outside with my first cup of coffee, I just... couldn't wrap my brain around how dark it felt... how chilly... and how breezy... yet with deep green grass & leaves... and a few juvenile crickets chirping here and there.
Zero cicadas today, and later at night... when I recorded after dark... it was garbage. Just too cool and windy for the field crickets! A couple here and there attempted to chirp once in a while, but... forget it!
If this was just a couple days of a weather system passing through, that would be one thing, but that's not what's going on. This is a buckling of the jet stream, that's brought colder air down here from up north, and it's been VERY stubbornly hanging around!

Is this climate change?.. well yes,to an extent. Climate change is responsible for the jet stream becoming a lot more chaotic over the past ten years.
But... on the scale of a single year, this can also be seen as... just an anomaly that can't last forever. We're still over a month away from the equinox. Hot weather, and stable air have to come back at some point, for some duration, between now and the start of astronomical autumn.
And the crickets aren't going anywhere. The cicadas haven't gone anywhere either. All the bugs who know how to sing are still out there... waiting for this fool's fall to lift and give summer one last chance to torture us with a blazing sun and blast furnace heat!
--<>--
But it could take a while for that window to open up again, so I think this coming week I need to try and make the best of the current situation and try some daytime recordings of stuff, like the field crickets chirping in the brush pile while the bush crickets are asleep for the day.
I dunno what else, but I'll be looking this coming week for some way to salvage this Fool's Fall catastrophe and get some content to upload.
