So, Today, Saturday the 13th was a third day without any cicadas... but magically, just before sunset, the clouds parted, and the cicadas began to buzz!

I was able to do my second canopy test at dusk tonight, and the resulting track, which was uploaded as a Dial, is quite gorgeous!

Unlike the first canopy test, this one is edited. Obnoxious revving car engines, and barking dogs have been removed. But that in itself is a proof of concept that I can conceivably edit a completely fake dusk track, out of the good parts of many takes over many days.

But the cicadas on this track are much closer... just by chance, to the S8 than in the first test, and much louder and much more clear... which is why it's so gorgeous.

This was a cool, cloudy, breezy evening. So... on a perfect, hot, sunny day at sunset, the canopy hoist should be able to capture many times the intensity of this take.

Later at night... around 11:30PM, I managed to FINALLY get my proof of concept for the ground level basket hanging below the tripod.

I got one single adult field cricket, so close to the mikes of the S8, that he took the focus, and forced everything else into the background. IT CAN BE DONE!

This track is also proof of concept for the SCOP rock garden, because that's where the tripod is standing... directly over the rocks, under the SCOP tower!

I'd written in recent entries about how I'd seen field crickets scurrying for cover as I lifted rocks in this garden that was meant to attract them. So I knew that part had worked, but they had not yet begun singing from that location at night.

Tonight, one did!

This suggests, that over time... a multitude of field crickets will be singing from this ideal location, in the center of the yard, away from the monotonous bush crickets.

If so... I may actually be able to just install a hook on the underside of the SCOP tower platform, to hang the basket a bit higher than it was in this test, to capture a small orchestra of field crickets in the foreground, with everything else... even barking dogs... muted into the background!

That's being a bit optomistic, but now, this ideal scenario IS inside the realm of probability!

------------{=0=}------------

If I truly can... get a small orchestra of field crickets into clear focus, around the S8... and if I can also get some great takes of wing tappers from up in the canopy at night... then I can edit together some truly amazing hours, worthy of getting stoned for!

Or... you know, meditation and dreaming, of course.

These were big breakthroughs, today, and tonight!

Let's knock on wood, and hope the third week of August gets us our first couple tracks of the main Snoozefest 2022 playlist!
