First Snag, as Test Recordings Begin
Tuesday, August 9th, 2022 09:13 pmOn Day three with the new kittens, things have been going well. They are using their two litter boxes, and there is no sign of pooping or peeing anywhere else! And they seem very much settled in, up here.
At the moment, Prowly is sitting in the window, listening to crickets, while Snoop is snoozing on the back of my chair, behind my neck.
I mowed the lawn, but not as early as I'd planned. There wasn't time to try and install the canopy hoist, but I did eye the mulberry tree again and picked out the limb I want to use.

It's oriented the right direction, at a decent height, without much blocking it from below, and it's got a natural crook in it, where the cable should sit nicely without drifting.

There is a dead branch below it, but i should be able to cut that off without too much trouble.
So tomorrow, I'm getting out there early! And, installing the canopy hoist, is gonna be the day's only project! It's gonna take some doing to get that weight up there and over the limb, but once that's done, the rest should be fairly easy.
The goal is to have the hoist ready to go for the dusk recording at 8PM!

I was gonna do a dusk recording tonight, one last time with the tripod, but some neighbors decided to start a huge bonfire around 7:30, with kids kicking balls around, and dogs everywhere barking... so it was not to be!
But conditions tonight seem perfect to try the season's first official cricket recording, with the basket low to the grass.
Little to no wind, and it's going down to 63F, which is far below the setpoints of the thermostats inside houses, which means no AC condensers kicking on.

UPDATE: 11:20PM
Okay, so I'm just back in from starting the season's first recording out there, and while all the conditions are perfect and there's not even any barking dogs...
My goddam neighbors to the north have a new in-ground pool, and it's got some kind of goddam pump running!
This could be the biggest obstacle I've ever faced! There's nowhere in my back yard to get away from the bubbly, buzzing drone of this pool pump!
But I'm going ahead with the recording, because I may find the stupid thing turns off intermittently? Or maybe it's not loud enough to be a concern... if the cricket signal gains enough focus from the S8?
If it does run all night, and does get onto the track... does it run every night?
I swear I've never heard it before tonight!
Trying not to panic here!...
Okay... the pool is for their stupid little kids so... there's a good chance that once school starts, they'll shut it all down!

I'd already been thinking that I won't get a good dusk recording until after school starts.
I wrote last week how kids off school tend to scream around sunset... in their joy of not having any homework or anything to get up for in the morning... which in turn sets off dogs barking.
And just tonight, other neighbors were having a bonfire... on a Tuesday night... which only happens when school is out.
So, maybe this stupid in-ground pool with it's pump is just another stumbling block of late summer.

For as much as I've been waxing poetic about August in this blog, September IS the month where all the players are fully mature and at the top of their game.
And as long as it's at least 60F at night... which it usually is, in September, they sing just fine... with the added bonus of the bush crickets not being as loud.
So... this pool filter's really got me shook tonight, and dreading that all is lost, but it's probably more likely that all is just delayed a bit longer? And that all will be fine?
This is why we do test recordings, I guess.
Also, I saw a possum out there!

When does school start anyway?.. It could be as early as next week, right? If not then definitely the week after that.
I'll just stay calm... continue my testing... and pray that they decomission the stupid above-ground pool in the near future.
