Lowest of the Low
Wednesday, July 27th, 2022 11:51 pmSo, I just had some new neighbors move in next door, and on Tuesday I saw they had a big black dog in a small cage in the back yard.
Next to the cage was a plastic dog carrier, and inside that, were two little dogs.
All three barked at me, when I went into my own back yard to do a little clipping of the ground foliage.
I reasoned that these dogs were only out here in these small enclosures because the new neighbors were probably inside unpacking, and moving furniture around, and didn't want them getting underfoot.

Six hours later, at midnight, after I'd done my walk around the block for a little exercise, and to hear how the street crickets were progressing... I rounded into my back yard to hear what the bugs were doing back there, and... was met with the woofs and yips of those three dogs, still outside, in their tiny enclosures.
I then saw the young man of the house get out of his car, and walk toward the back. Oh good! Was he coming to finally bring them inside?
Nope! He went in his back door like they weren't even there.
Not a great sign!
Still trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, I reasoned that for young couples (mid 20s) midnight's not so late, right? Maybe they got a late start today and wouldn't be done unpacking and such until one or two AM. Then they'd come bring the dogs in, for sure!
------------{=0=}------------
This afternoon I took my own dog, my dad's old husky, out for a walk and saw Jenny, the old neighbor, who'd sold that house next door to the new people... talking to Ava, the neighbor who lives next door to them on the other side.
Long story short, Ava told me those three dogs had been outside in those tiny enclosures not just for the whole night, but since last Friday night! Five days and counting!.. all day and all night... with no sign that these new neighbors were doing anything for these dogs!
Ava had called Jenny about it. Jenny, who had come by to pick up some last few things, somehow managed to talk the new couple into letting her take the bigger black dog off their hands. And she's bringing it to a shelter.
This was after Ava had called animal control... who paid a visit to the house, but, because nobody answered the door... just left.
I told Ava I'd call Animal Control myself, to corroborate her story.
An hour later I went back there to check, and the two little dogs were still inside the plastic dog carrier.
It was too late for Animal Control to pick up the phone. They'd closed at 4:30PM. But I did put their number in my phone, and then I wrote them an email tonight.
I'll call them in the morning, but in the email, I laid out the story.

My bar is pretty low for what qualifies you as a shitty neighbor.
You can blast music outside, full volume, all night on the weekend, and blow up fireworks all summer, and I don't care. I won't call anybody.
But animal neglect and cruelty is NOT something I'm gonna ignore.

This is not the kind of stuff I want to be writing about in a blog about amateaur field recording... But this could have an impact on that, because these are the damn neighbors!.. and they are NOT good people!
We all know this type... idiots who acquire pets they have no intention of caring for?
It's never said of somebody who does this, that they have other redeeming qualities.
--<>--
Often such idiots swing home loans they can't afford, so they likely won't be next door forever. But they will be there this summer and fall.
Ava and I won't stop until Animal Control saves the dogs, but it's gonna put us both at odds with these douchebags.
So, there could be some scrutiny of my late night efforts to do field recording from my back yard... some kind of retaliation. I dunno!
Hopefully everything will be fine, but... this is what was on my mind all day, today.
