Tuesday the 19th was my day to buckle down and process a bunch of WAV files for upload to the Soundcloud. I also recorded two new tracks, and uploaded them.

It was a busy day, and that's why the blog entry here, is being written in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

Last things first, I got outside just after midnight to capture some of those high-pitched newbies I was writing about in the last entry. The first native crickets to appear on the soundscape in 2022, which I suspect to be nymphs, one molt away from adulthood.

As you'll plainly hear in the track embedded below, these are not full-size adults!.. yet they are singing...

FIRST CRICKETS

Sadly, as of today, Larry the loner is no longer with us :(

Not sure what happened to him. But he is memorialized in a couple of the June recordings embedded below. RIP Larry; you were too ahead of your time :(

Okay, still working backward... I did a sunset recording of the Cicadas tonight (sunset of the 19th) and it's a pretty gorgeous track!

In the last entry, I talked about, "yarping," and you can hear them very clearly doing this in the latter third of this track.

SUNDOWN 1

This is what I consider to be a rare take, because it's full blown cicadas with zero crickets or leaf tappers after the sun sets.

Also, it's kinda hilarious how the last foreground cicada to conk out on this track as dusk ends, sounds like he's short circuiting.

Next, I FINALLY uploaded Chime Test 7. This was the keychime test from way back on June 30th, where I used the smaller paper sails.

You'll recall there was a bit of a snag at the end of June after recording Chime Test 6 and Chime Test 7, where I thought the S8 mikes were distorting. But it turned out to be my PC speakers.

Well, Chime Test 6 never got re-uploaded, because it was using the full size paper plates, and... just a little too crazy. But Chime Test 7 proves that the smaller paper sails, in about 7MPH wind are perfect!

CHIME TEST 7

This track is unedited, because there were too many random dog barks, fireworks, speeding cars, and passing planes to get out of there.

But you do hear Larry the loner through this whole track. RIP Larry; we hardly knew you! :(

I also recorded on July 4th (US Independence Day) in the back yard for an hour, to capture the insanity that goes on in my neighborhood on that night every year.

Also, Larry the loner can be heard throughout this track as well. RIP Larry; your heart was pure, but your fate was coarse! :(

EXPLOSION DAY

It's worth noting that Illinois has the strictest fireworks laws in the US, with a total ban on all fireworks across the state, and a ban on bottle rockets and even SPARKLERS in the Chicago metro!

Yet this solid hour of high grade pyrotechnics was just the first of a three hour onslaught that went on all across town!

Prohibition doesn't work. XD

The final DIAL that I uploaded is just one minute that came out of a test track recorded on June 23rd. Somebody shrieking and calling in the far distance. The nearby dobermans offer a few barks of concern about it.

It's haunting.

DISTRESS IN THE DISTANCE

I wasn't sure I should upload this at all, but... who knows what was going on? Could've been a drunk. Might've been a crime in progress, but... not like this recording would do any good as evidence.

So, I'm all up to date with the uploads and getting ready for the main season!
