Systems 1 & 2
It was an absolutely gorgeous day, with the trees still at full color, but the air was a balmy 78F. Perfect for soaking in the fall vibe, but too hot to work on the fallen tree.
I did, however run out to get some groceries in the early afternoon.
I shouldn't have had money for groceries today, but the State of Illinois, kindly deposited $50.00 in my bank account last night, as part of a small stimulus to help people out with inflation.
At Aldi, I got just enough of everything, to keep me going for another week, spending only 40 of the 50 dollars.

I also got that Amazon Business Prime card today in the mail, and activated it.
That's the one I've SWORN not to use, until I have enough income to service the debt.
BUT...
Well, goddammit, Snoop & Prowly desperately need a cat climber!
They are still extremely rambunctious cats, not yet full grown, and they have gone two and a half months now, without a proper cat climber! And they've been such good kitties, you guys!
I still had $27.00 left on the Amazon gift card I'd used to buy the rope and pulleys. So... dammit!.. I found a really nice cat climber, suitable for two cats, with little hammocks and cat caves, and perches... standing almost six feet... for $90.00... which is a pretty good deal!
The gift card knocked that price down, and after taxes & shipping it came out to about $80.00... charged to the Business Prime card!
It'll be here by Halloween!.. dammit!

Switching back to the subject of the inner workings of the human brain, I was served a TikTok today in the feed, that backs up what I was saying yesterday, about there being two brains.
It was a clip from an ancient Veritasium video, which I've located on YouTube... with information that is parallel to the CGP Grey video I embeded in yesterday's entry.
How did TikTok know to show me this?..
Obviously it's spying on me, like every other app on my phone and computer... and the Russians, Chinese, and the FBI, of course!
At any rate, here's the embed:
And then, just to be thorough, I'll re-embed the CGP Grey video from yesterday:
The Veritasium video talks about, "System One, and System Two," within the brain.
One system is your conscious mind, and the one you'd think of as being... yourself!
The other system is operating in the background, independently... soaking up all kinds of information at light speed... and using it to build up neural networks that will allow, you, to better deal with daily tasks in the future.
In the video, he says that faster system sifts out the relevant information and discards the rest, but... does it?
Or does it store all the background details elsewhere... to be used in the building of dream environments?

Now, the Veritasium video does NOT say that System 1, and System 2, correspond to the right and left brains.
And the CGP Grey video... which IS about right and left brains... does NOT say that one is faster at background processing than the other.
But... BOTH videos say that ONE of their two entities, is... YOU!
CGP Grey says one half of the brain is YOU, the one who can speak.
Veritasium says one of the two systems is YOU, the one dealing with problems in real time.
Now...
When Brains Dream did NOT talk about the left/right brain dichotomy, or the Systems 1/2 dichotomy... BUT... they DID draw a pretty clear line between YOU, and your dream apparatus.
SO...
I'm sticking to my theory that Dream Guy is the other person... the other system... the one who is not, YOU.
The above two videos dealt with waking life. The book dealt with dreams. I'm looking for a theory that would explain both waking and sleeping experience... in terms of two distinct... neural entities... one of which is YOU.
In the Veritasium video, he says that the other system is working to build pathways that make tasks easer for YOU, in the future.
And this is almost exactly what Zadra & Stickgold said was the purpose of NEXTUP, the process at work when we dream.
Veritasium says the other system throws away most of the data it captures, but saves the relevant stuff, to work with.
Zadra & Stickgold say NEXTUP builds the dream world out of a wealth of data it's collected, and stored, without your knowlege... but builds the narative of the dream, on the relevant stuff from the day.

So, I think all roads lead to Rome here!
We have a second person in our heads who does all the background work, day and night!

But, you know... that's just a hypothesis, and it may or may not be so cut and dried in reality.
So, the next book I'm going to be listening to (using another free Audible credit) is, Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman. From 2011, I believe this is the book that inspired the Veritasium video.
Kahneman is an American psychologist and economist, whose work is focused on the psychology of judgement and decision making... according to Wikipedia.
So... this should be an interesting side quest, on our winter's journey to understand sleep, dreams, and the human mind!

Lastly, I am not recording tonight because... as usual, on a warm Saturday night... people are playing music and partying outside.
But I may be able to record tomorrow night... and, because it's breezy, I'm thinking of putting the small sails on the SCOP wind chimes.
It could be a good track!
